All American Standard, Deluxe, Special, and even the Mexican Standard- all maple fbs are caps, even the ones with skunk stripes.
There have been other random examples since the 60s. The earliest Telecaster Basses in 68 were also caps.

So essentially these are the same spec as a 50's P? (Same neck profile etc?) Other than the obvious pickup difference that is...

I've had a closer look and the Waters P has a different radius to the 50's too. Hmmm... I do GAS for a maple P and the 50's versions have gotten some good reviews.
