I'll probably use this for other basses as well just to keep updated but does anyone know what bass it is that's played in the video for get lucky by daft punk I'd assume it's Dan Armstrong or something but id like a second opinion

Posted (edited)

Think it's a custom jobby...

Here are some stills I managed to find...

And some not-so-stills to aid identification:

Ok - I managed to get the 2nd & 3rd stills from a screencap from the music vid on youtube. Under fair use, and stating that the music, and the music video remain property of their respective owners . . . it should be ok?

EDIT: Compared to a genuine Dan Armstrong - the body is close, the neck is not.

Maybe it's me, but the video isn't coming up. Maybe it's the moving images by PlungerModerno that stop it

Sorry I can't help but I notice it's an odd design as the fingerboard ends at the point where the neck meets the body

I'd be interested to see it as I recon it's made in CGI

I think the custom bit is the body. I'd guess that neck could have come from a multitude of places - it's a Fender looking headstock at least... Loads of that stuff available.

That body reminds me of a PRS initially, but with a long lower horn. Being that it's some sort of clear plastic, it could be made by someone not associated with the bass business. I'm sure someone jumped at the chance to make Nile and *bass player* some clear bodies for the vid !

Dan Armstrong shaped body with a P-type neck, might be a bitsa but probably more likely to be a one-off build.

Pickup looks like a Gibson Mudbucker type, which you won't find on a Dan or any of the various 70s copies, as far as I know. Most of the copies had twin humbuckers, but there's no routing visible for these so I don't think the body's from an old copy. The base of the neck extends beyond the heel of the board so it can fit to the body, I would guess this neck's been made specifically to do this.

Cool bass but I think if you want one you'll have to make one!

Ta! Possibly my only use in life is to identify (or not) obscure basses and in so doing, create confusion.

My work here is done. Unless anyone else knows better...

As far as I know the only Acrylic basses that went into production were made by Dan Armstrong. The rest are probably one-offs. I've seen several acrylic P basses, John Entwistle had one and I saw one being used in Goldfrapp.

This could have been made to match the Ludwig Vistalite drum kit and fit the futuristic robotic look. Nathan East said he used his regular Yamaha on the record.

Nathan East is a beast. The bass in the vid is awesome, but as has been said - it's probably a one off.

There are plenty of custom bass makers who'd be happy to assemble or make such a bass - for a price. I'd like one - but the solid plastic ones tend to weigh a ton.
How about turning it up a notch??? take a peek at what's possible, without resorting to 3D printing: http://lamondguitars.com/gallery.html

Now imagine a 3D print with UV luminous plastics, and organic patterns as complex as wood grain. . .

When it comes to acrylic instruments, this has to be the best thread on the net...

Most of the 70s Japanese factories did a Dan copy - really good article here: http://www.danarmstr...org/copies.html

As far as other production seethroughs is concerned, budget brand Axl did a P a few years back, I built a rather lovely but too heavy to actually lift project based around the body of one of these:

Neck's a bit rubbish too, but it looks great! Off to read the TDPRI thread now...

We had the Luthier from Crimson Guitars, Ben Crowe come to our Bass Bash last year. He brought along a prototype totally Perspex Bass built for Charlie Jones, it weighed a ton and the neck flexed at will. Next version had a wooden neck or at least a wooden fingerboard.

Posted

Didn`t Wesley or some other cheap brand have a range of perspex basses out a couple of years ago? Not suggesting that the one in the video is one by the way.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the bass in the video was just a non-functioning prop...
That's what I'm thinking. Bearing in mind the "creative" transparent visual theme for the video, the instruments are probably custom made props.

I was thinking the same.

I don't think even our Nige would be able to play with those gloves on. :)
