Paul S
Sounds brilliant. I am not sure I have ever heard anything quite like it before. Is it one of those voice tubes or something else? Sounds too organic to be an envelope filter. http://youtu.be/7Ya2U8XN_Zw
mentalextra
I like the bass on this too. In fact, I'm surprised it slipped under the BC radar. Who was the bassist? Edited January 5, 2015 by mentalextra
Graham
At a guess I'd Stuart Zender as he played on the last Mark Ronson album and I think MD'd for him as well.
Bassnut62
We're doing it in our set already. Our bass player has got some great and very workable sounds for it from a Mutron with an Aguilar Octamizer. Not sure if that's what was used on original, but it works. I reckon a lot of the sound is in the fingers too tho.
synthaside
Were also doing this in our set , I'm getting a pretty decent sound for this using an inexpensive Digitech Synth wah on envelope down setting with the sensitivity right up and playing finger style real hard when i want the envelope to really open towards the end of bits , sounds good on the climbing run and slide back too. Eats 9 volts like a demon though. :-( ... not one if you dont/ cant use a 9 volt adapter , 3 x 9 volts eaten in the course of two weeks its got to the point where I'm unplugging it pre and post song. I've got an inkling from the live performances its Jamareo Artis , getting funky on this one , i like his work a lot. Sammers
I'm definitely not hearing any envelope or any other effects on the bass track, just sounds like a clean five string to me. Unless you mean the "do do" bits at the very beginning? That just sounds like backing vocal to me. It's nice that this kinda pop funk is coming back into the charts though, first with Get Lucky and now this!
synthaside
I mean to reproduce the intro sound, which is vocals I assumed that was what the OP was talking about when they said " Is it one of those voice tubes" but i'm also also using it for for the overdub parts in the middle to try and fill out the climbing slide i think its a not bad reproduction of the overall sound of the song In a 4 piece setup , with no army of backing vocals to tackle it. Its not perfect by any means but it sounds tidy in the mix, and for <a night out at the pub in terms of pedal not too bad Edited January 6, 2015 by synthaside
stingraybassman
Think its Jamareo Artis playing on this. Whoever it is, brilliant bassline.
If it's the Digitech Bass Synth Wah then I'm not surprised you've gone through that many batteries - IIRC consumption is around 300mA at 9V so definitely not recommended to run off of a battery. In fact I think the manual mentions to only use batteries for testing and to use a PSU all the time. M@23
I reckon it is Jamareo Artis too - the fills sound like the sort of thing he is in to when you see them live. I had assumed the vocal was just a sampled vocal doubling the bassline. Whatever it is, it sounds ace.
bassfunk
Was just listening to this this morning. I'm thinking I might have a bash at this this week. Probably is Jamareo Artis doesn't he play with Bruno Mars who also appears on this?
Mike
Yes, definitely just a low bass-range vocal doubling the bass guitar.
scalpy
Just had a trawl through jamareo's Twitter feed and there's a lot of love for uptown funk. He also mentions that 5 strings are uncomfortable to his fingers. Now that's taking the.....
MarshallBTB
This is going in our set too. Clean bass for me, sounds great. I think I read somewhere that Jeff Bhasker played keys and bass, not 100% though.
bubinga5
i think this is not an electric bass guitar at all.
bubinga5
when you think that Richard Bull programmed this incredible bass line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqoGkIbw35E
bubinga5
you realise what is possible.. i think he may have played this on the keys, i can't remember. its not a bass guitar i know that. UglyDog
If those exquisite Jazz-sounding fills on the Ronson/Mars track are programmed and not bass guitar, I will eat my kennel.
FuNkShUi
I know it doesn't mean much, but when they performed it live on the US version of "the Voice", the guy played a Precision style bass. I know, i know, it doesn't gaurantee it was on the record, and the performance may have been "mimed", I'm just saying

Sammers
Bruno Mars has tweeted that it is actually Jamareo Artis on bass https://twitter.com/...361978169651200
Beer of the Bass
I figured it was bass guitar, but doubled with a synth for the main bassline. The production in general is very Parliament-esque, and that's exactly the sort of thing they did on the old P-Funk records.
M@23
I think the poster above is refering to the vocal doubling the main bass line?
Paul S
If Skippy is peanut butter and not bush tucker then it sounds interesting. Peanut butter is, for me, food of the Devil and completely irresistible. Whole Earth Organic with no added sugars, preferably, but I'll eat any old whipped sludge in an emergency. Skippy may qualify here. I wonder if you could get this kind of effect from one of those Joe Walsh/Herbie Hancock/Peter Frampton voice box thingies with a tube. That is what it sounds like, to me, whether it is or not. Does anyone know if one of these has ever been used for a bass? if so, examples?
