Bigjas
I am looking for my first studio monitors. I am a novice when it comes to all things recording, have got a laptop and DAW with interface etc and have recorded our band. I am now needing to listen to my recordings so I can finish them off. I have been looking around the second hand market as my budget is quite small (£150 ish) and it seems if you ask 10 people what is best, you get 10 different answers. I have looked through the previous threads on here and the same monitors come up so these are a sure bet secondhand I assume. I have also stumbled across the Studiospares Seiwin 6" Active Monitors at £160 a pair. https://www.studiospares.com/Headphones-and-Speakers/Studio-Monitors/Studiospares-Seiwin-6-Active-Monitor-Pair_248030.htm The reviews on the website seem too good to be true, with people stating they are as good as more expensive items. Does anyone have any first hand experience with these monitors? They are very cheap and I am always mindful of the expression 'buy cheap, buy twice'. So just seeing if they are worth a punt really? Thanks Jas
RockfordStone
i have a pair of these, they have come down in price since i got them about 5 years ago, but they serve me well. https://www.studiospares.com/Headphones-and-Speakers/Studio-Monitors/M-Audio-AV40-Pair-Monitors_373120.htm?ne=AQAAAAMAAAAEB00tQXVkaW8= the thing is with monitors, is a lot of it depends on the person listening, you ear for example may be tuned to hear more mid frequencies than mine, which is why a lot of people will say different things. it will also depend on your studio space, you could buy the most expensive monitors in the world, but an untreated room will make them sound cack. if they are your first set of monitors, for the price they will probably do the job, best way to find out is suck it and see. They will be better than headphones.

lurksalot
Different rooms have varying acoustic properties and will reflect different frequencies of sound and bounce them around the room, these reflections will, at some point reach your ear , and these 'stray' sounds will colour or interfere with the pure sound you should be hearing , even differing positions in the room will give differing effects. In most circumstances I don't reckon it to be a massive issue unless you are really keen or a pro , but you only have to walk around the house and shout 'echo' in every room an listen to the difference in the sound reflection coming back at you, and that effect may affect each frequency band differently . Stephen Houghton
Here's a good example of the before and after effect of a treated room, if you think about it what you hear as you mix, may not actually be what's going on in the mix itself, when played back through normal speakers in a different place it may sound totally different. If your room has bass problems, you may think the bass level is correct in a mix when it really is way out. Have a listen to the example here and think how hard it would be to mix or even get a decent recording of an instrument or vocal using a mic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp56A6TcL1E
timmo
Thanks for that. It is interesting what some soundproofing can do
lurksalot
Ah , now sound proofing and room treatments are not quite the same thing
VTypeV4
I haven't used these particular speakers but I have had good experience with their own brand replacement drivers (JBL 2226 copies) which have proved to be both tough and sonically fit for purpose.. I can't imagine they'd sell anything thats poor or sub-standard as I know a few other folks who have had items from SS and talk highly of the service and product.. I guess i should have known as it would be covering the whole room to be soundproofed
