I dunno, what genre's this?

Massacre - Legs: http://youtu.be/ETxtSbfpjHE

Bill Laswell getting a bit odd here. Which I really like because I don't think enough players truly embrace the great comedy value of the fretless. Enough weeping about for crying out loud.

Treat it like a trombone I say.

thanks for the replys, i have bit the bullet and ordered the esp 5 string fretless from thorman, told the mrs it was 250 but still only 320 plus free delivery. going to but some black flats on as suggested

I've had one and regret selling. Mine had flats. For me it lacked bite. If I had it now I'd fit Elixir rounds, each to their own.

That bass has a beautiful neck. You won't regret it.

No instrument is bounded to a genre or a time frame. The 'Jaco' or 'Pino' styles of fretless playing are not the only 'schools' and the instrument has moved with the music.

Well I was being provocative but, in fairness, the sum total of this thread would suggest not. (I'll give you Mick Karn but that was 30 years ago.)

As for the 'experimental fretless funk' and Tony Franklin, I see that less of a 'school' as a couple of bad cases of bass tourettes.

Here's a "best fretless bass guitarists of all time" list that doesn't even include Pino. I'd add Percy Jones to the list as well.

[/quote]Worst list ever. These things are always divisive, but that's ridiculous.

In answer to the OP; what genres? All of them.
