Nothing at all wrong with you, you just didn't get on with it.

I bought one a few years ago as I was offered it for a great price. Thought it was one of the worst basses I'd ever played in my life so sold it a few weeks later.
I wouldn't have one again if I was offered it for free.

I would stick with it for a while. I bought a Stingray and didn't like it at first - stuck it under the bed for six months, picked it up one day and now I can't put it down. Maybe it will grow on you.

I daresay you won't be the last to be disappointed by a Stingray 5, particularly if your a Stingray 4 player.

However, the classic series fiver is the 'real' stingray 5 and I would love to give one of those a try. Sorry if I have induced further GAS ;)

This is the second time in one year when I've borrowed one of my friend's SR5. I like the tone, but can't get along with the bass play-wise. It's just not it.
It's not bad, I like the neck for example.
I guess if I'd use it more in a band setting - where these shine the most - this might change, but then again, I have my Spector that cuts through and love the playability so why bother really.....

I`m exactly the same - annoyingly I might add. I love Stingrays but they just don`t sound like "me" when I`m playing them.

I first tried one in 1993, it was awful, didn't know what all the fuss was about!

It certainly looks better than the "normal" SR5, and it's good to see a properly finished neck & not this DIY oil finish bollocks.

The neck profile is ace too, flat like an early 80s Ray rather than the clubby shape people think of.

Most are fretted conversions to fretless ones or had the maple board cut off and a RW one fitted afaik.

A 'transition' era one would do you though, same as a pre EB but you can have RW and it will have body contours?

Drooool. One day I'd like to upgrade my SUB to a 5 String Sterling or Musicman. I wasn't so keen on it at first, but since I got a second bass (a P-bass, which I love) it's made me appreciate my Ray even more.

I love pre Ernie Balls but only do rosewood fingerboards. Do they exist?!?

I expect it will still be there when you get back :-)

I never understood why for so many years the Ray 5 had a ceramic pickup, yet the Ray 4 had the lovely alnico ones.

I wonder how many people that disliked those ceramic version fives would like them again if they tried them with an alnico pickup?

Ive recently traded for a stingray 5 after havin gas for one,now ive come to conclusion its not for me.i really want to like it but i cant lol argh.
Whats wrong with me?
[/quote]

Ok, I have to step in here, I think there IS something wrong with you lol.

But seriously, knowing you just offloaded a beautiful Spector rebop 5, and now you are moving on a stingray 5, is it the active growl you don't like? The rebop is a 35" scale and the 'Ray is a 35", which do you prefer?? I found the neck very playable on my us SUB, which felt the same as a U.S. ray, and my NS2000/5 doesn't feel too far from that so assume the rebop and the Ray are not too different?

Tell us more, is it just GAS? Are you searching for the holy grail? Gives some reasons WHY none of these basses were for you, they are both great basses imho. Throw us a bone and maybe we can help!!!
If you want an active bass, have you looked at the Fernandez Gravity deluxe? Others that spring to mind are G&L, sandberg or sadowsky they are active basses with their own distinct sound but not as growls as Spector or stingray.
If it is a passive sound you seek, have you tried a U.S. fender jazz 5???

Having seen jassbass buying and selling stuff on Facebook forums... I don't think it's possible for him to have more GAS than he does at the moment!
