bubinga5
i never had a favourite band. but these come close. was playing this album earlier today with my nieces , and later on they were singing the sax part of this. they asked me," what is the song was about uncle Andrew". i didn't want to begin to explain.i think that might up for debate.? everyone has there opinion on this record. more importantly, i hope they absorb this music and it has the same effect later on in there life, that it has for me. its just wonderful music. i don't want to smother them with music i love, but i don't think any harm will come from listening to it. Aja is next. Edited January 11, 2015 by bubinga5
Allie
The Royal Scam - my most favourite album of SD. Thanks for this tho..
Coilte
The Royal Scam - my most favourite album of SD.
Same here....along with their first album.."Cant Buy A Thrill". TBH, "Gaucho" would be a bit further down on my list. RhysP
Got all the Steely Dan albums up to & including Gaucho, but Gaucho is the one that never gets played. I like Babylon Sisters & Hey Nineteen, but the rest of it leaves me cold. Countdown to Ecstacy is easily my favourite album of theirs. JapanAxe
I have all the albums, and love Gaucho. For an explanation, start here, but I suggest you look it up on your own first!
ezbass
The Dan are just so good at turning out quality recordings but if I had to pick a favourite it would be another vote for The Royal Scam, but only just.
spongebob
Big 'Gaucho' fan here too. 2nd on the list? Can I throw in 'Katy Lied'? Big admirer of that one, too.
wateroftyne
I've started digging them a bit more recently... The production is marvellous. It's a lost art.
spongebob
I keep meaning to dig into the two 'newer' SD albums they made this century. Head one track from the first one ('Cousin Dupree') and it sounded very good. Even the production sounded great, which I never think modern (ie the last 20 years) records ever do. bubinga5
I'm sure it is Goucho that is renowned for many session players, playing on it.? Correct,?
Bassnut62
Aja had many session players on it too, as did some of earlier LPs....it's well worth checking out the Classic Albums documentary on Aja on BBC4 or Sky Arts 1. Such classy arrangers and musicians. I think Chuck Rainey was on Royal Scam too. The Dan were reknowned for using some of the very best sessionistas on East and West coast
Phil Adams
Always loved the title track Goucho. All the albums are superb in different ways. If I had to choose one, well, I couldn't decide between Pretzel Logic and Katy Lied. Took me a long time to get used to the smoother way the band was heading. ColinB
Lucky they didn't ask you what Steely Dan is!!!!
ras52
LOVE Gaucho (the album). I recall it wasn't big at the time - Aja was a tough act to follow. Don't the CD versions of the albums have amusing notes as to the "meanings" of the songs by Fagen & Becker? I recall this one as being about a gay love triangle... wombatboter
Great cd, actually had this cd (my first one) before I owned a cd-player !
This was my belief also. I think I remember reading that Becker and Fagan tried no less than six guitarists for a short solo on just one track, before settling on one. Cant remember which track.
ezbass
I think that track would be Peg from Ajá
