markdavid
I have been reading about some abss players using a foam mute near the bridge, i wouldlove to try this but dont know where to aquire this from , any suggestions?
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I have found the dark grey/black foam that comes packed around OEM Hard disks to be perfect - just cut with sissors. If you don't know anyone that's bought a HDD recently I think a servicable mute could be cut from a baby bath sponge, (but only if you like pastel colours). ped
Hi mate, I got a piece of foam from packaging for a pair of speakers and it worked really well, but I guess I got lucky because I lost it and could not find a piece which worked as well, or evenly accross all the stings. Eventually I got a bassmute (www.bassmute.com) which does the job really well, it is a switchable mute which you can tape or screw to your bass. It is fully adjustable so you can adjust it to taste. Definitely try the square of foam first, as the bassmute is frankly a bit steep, but if it is a sound you use a lot, may I reccomend the bassmute as a long term solution! Lenny B
Note Tesco kitchen sponge (having removed scouring side) stuck under strings by bridge. I've had some great results with it, and, as said above, can be removed in seconds.
markdavid
Thanks for the suggestions , will try the kitchen spong idea and see how that works for me. Has anybody tried putting foam underneath the strings (ie - piece of foam on saddles underneath strings) and if so has it worked ok?
acidbass
You could of course buy the official Fender aftermarket ones, although they require a more permanent installation. They'd certainly look (and sound) the dogs if you had a Fender. Toasted
Is that a T40?
markdavid
Hi all, Have tried a folded jay cloth under the strings , sounds awesome , works really well. I think i may have to invest in a more permanent solution like a bass mute as I think I may have found my sound
99ster
On the fabulous 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' DVD you can clearly see that Bob Babbitt has a simple piece of foam sponge under the strings by the bridge on his '65 P Bass (with LaBella Medium flatwounds) - & he gets a great sound. "...it had no foam dampener, so I found a sponge in the dressing room, tore off a piece, wet it, and put it under my bridge cover..." Edited July 20, 2007 by 99ster
