Silvia Bluejay Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Here with its fretted "twin" I got a few months ago. More and better photos to follow once I've replaced the rounds with D'Addario Chromes Quote
FuNkShUi Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Noooice. Just need the 4 string versions fretted and fretless now Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015
Mmmmmmmmm ... intonation.
I'm ready to get rid of the spring on the low B's saddle on this one too, if that's what you're referring to! Quote

I asked the question on FB (I've got lots of BCers there too) and I was told by many who use 5 stringers with flats that the problem is all too common. Quote
uk_lefty Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Let us know how it goes! The bubinga fretless corvette is calling my name...! Quote
blablas Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Beautiful twins, they look great next to each other. Quote
ezbass Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Very nice, how do they compare tone-wise? Is one just a fretless version or is there something else going on too? Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 From the tone point of view, I can't say I can hear much of a difference between the two - both have a body made of ash and an ovangkol neck, and only the fingerboard is different (tiger ebony in the fretless, wenge in the fretted). Both have identical sets of D'Addario Chromes on, and I play both through the same PJB combo (one at a time, haha!). Although the fretted is a 2013 model and the fretless is from 2010, the differences in the body shape are very subtle, and probably have little impact on the sound itself. It's mostly the playing style on the fretless that makes the difference, wot wiv it not having them bleedin' frets making unwanted clanky noises... I'm deeply in love with both the sound and the look of both. Some more pics of the new baby: Note the low B saddle minus the spring! Quote
ezbass Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 What is it with flatwounds and intonating the B string? I have to have the saddle on my Ibby GWB35 wound back all the way too since I fitted the LaBellas, it was far more central with roundwounds. Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 I don't know the tecnical details, but it must have to do with the different way in which flats vibrate - because they tend to be 'stiffer' (for lack of a more technical term). I'm sure someone more experienced can explain tension, compliance and all that jazz... Quote
sblueplanet Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 That's a nice grain on that fretless body. Makes me regret not buying an early neck-thru fretless 5 Thumb bass when I had the opportunity and the funds. Quote
