JapanAxe
'Any line, pointer, or screw on a control knob should point towards the player on a line perpendicular to that of the strings when the associated control is at its maximum or centre detent position.' - Reg. 4(1)(a)The Bass Guitar Regulations 1998 (as amended) That is all. molan
I tend to point all knobs towards me on a regular passive bass in the 'full on' position. If an active bass has a vintage type control then I'll set it in the middle position when the screw is pointing at me as I use them for quick subtle adjustments on the fly. Then there's basses like a Sadowsky or an Alleva Coppolo with boost only active systems. They will generally be pointed away from me in the off position. That lets me see how much boost I'm using as I dial the control towards me. There's probably more as well . . .

EssentialTension
I try to use my ears to control my knobs.

ead
It's generally the first thing I do with a new bass - if there's some kind of position indicator on the volume and tone knobs, I'll line them up so that they're pointing vertically when fully on. It's especially important on Jazz basses, because if you like them up to be vertical when fully on, they'll follow the line of the control plate when fully off, and that's nice and neat. It ASTOUNDS me that they don't do this in the factory. Do people just not care? Is it just me?
What a relief; I know I'm a bit OCD about stuff. Glad not to be alone
ColinB
If I can't get the push-fit knob on the shaft (stop it!) so all the markers are in line when fully on, I've taken the control plate off and rotated the pot slightly to get perfect alignment. My day's tend to be quite slow.
