Skol303
I like that one, although i think it is somewhat 'inspired by' Cliff Martinez's Solaris soundtrack
Yes! I've seen Solaris and the soundtrack is great, good call Two others that have sprung to mind: 'Escape from New York' and 'Assault on Precinct 13'... and pretty much everything else that John Carpenter has scored. But those two films in particular. Brilliantly atmospheric yet catchy at the same time. He's the daddy!

The only John Carpenter film score I've consciously made a note of was Dark Star, which to me sounded like a recording of someone's first attempt at getting sounds out of an analogue synthesiser. ambient
Good to see that there's still a lot of appreciation for soundtracks that are specifically scored to fit to the film and not simply a collection of someone's favourite songs shoe-horned around the dialogue. I have to admit though I own a lot of soundtrack CDs for some very awful films that have been bought simply because they contained a track by an artist I liked that wasn't available anywhere else.
Good point, I think a lot of suggestions so far have been films with songs in them, rather than actual real soundtracks. The blues brothers for instance. timmo
Ennio Morricone. He is a master is Western film scores.None of the score i would listen to in the car, but in the movies, it makes tension and drama. Quadrophenia is one i listen to a lot

Love both the films and the soundtracks (well maybe not Ghosts of Mars and Escape from LA ). Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing probably my two faves. Which brings up Morriocone. Absolute genius. Wooks79
I'm a big fan of a lot of horror soundtracks, and I do pin the blame firmly with John Carpenter. I have been a vinyl subscriber with a label called Death Waltz Recordings who have reissued a lot of the Carpenter scores on vinyl oer the last few years, amongst other great and weird releases. A few personal faves have to be the soundtrack by Antoni Maiovvito a short film called 'Yellow', the soundtrack to 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' by Sinoia Caves (Jeremy Schmidt from Black Mountain) and the soundtrack to the Shining conspircay documentary called 'Room 237' by Jonathan Snipes & William Hudson. The whole synth sound of horror soundtracks that I like also spills over into a few really cool bands that I like, such as Zombi, The Slasher Film Festival Strategy and Pye Corner Audio. 'Drokk: Music inspired by Megacity One' by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury is another excellent example of a soundtrack style album. MoonBassAlpha
The Mambo Kings has a nice soundtrack, especially if you like, err, mambo! My Mrs loves Armand Assanti, so I get to see it quite a lot. No, I don't get it either...

lowdown
Good point, I think a lot of suggestions so far have been films with songs in them, rather than actual real soundtracks. The blues brothers for instance.
Yep. Original Score, written or cued for the film. Soundtrack, collection of pre recorded tunes/songs from elsewhere (known pop tunes etc). Although some/ many films might have a mix of both. And of course these days, some of the material is sourced from high end library and production companies then re-timed or amended to fit the picture, resulting in a collection of a few composers. But possibly an opening theme and credits may be commissioned. Music supervisors play a big part in films these days, often sourcing and filling in the gaps music wise. Skinner
There are some great soundtracks by Eric Serra who often collaborates with the director Luc Besson. Earlier stuff such as the last Battle and Subway then on to Nikita and Leon etc-the films are excellent it's a great combination of talents. GremlinAndy
Not heard the soundtrack separately but after watching "Birdman" I was totally blown away by the score. I don't think it would hold up without the movie, but in the context of the movie, it was like the punctuation in a novel! ...in as much as on its own it would be a bunch of apostrophies and full stops, but by the same token, a novel without its punctuation would just be incomplete. Brilliantly appropriate.
