NO TRADES thanks ;-) Hi all, just want to be clear here. If you want a slightly worn untouched 1974 Jazz bass, go to Andy Baxter as he will have some top stuff at 2-3 times the price. If you want a Fender 1974 Jazz with a small plate covering a hole that was done sometime over the 40 years and think that £1000 or more is a reasonable amount to reduce the bass by, then read on.... ;-) Based in mid-Norfolk. I *will* ship the bass but am loathed to be honest. I would much rather you see what you are buying due to it being a vintage instrument with wear. That said, I have photographed in explicit detail (and can provide more photos) so if you are prepared to organise a courier that would be fine. Serial number: 407847 1974 Fender Jazz bass. Last of the 4 bolt neck I think. As you can see, it's 40 years old and has the usual wear to the body. I love this look personally. At some point over the 40 years an extra switch was added to the body near the bridge but the hole has been covered with a pro made plate to match the scratch plate. I did look into a luthier filling the hole and respraying the body to make it 100% which was deemed as easily do-able (skimming the hole to make precise, then filling with piece of wood and finishing), but fell in love with the worn look and have left it that way. I do not have the original ashtray or neck pickup cover but these can be purchased new and fit directly on. I am unsure but the ashtray cover 'may' foul the switch cover though. Neck pickup sounds great, bridge pickup sounds great, tone control works fine. When both pickups are at full chat there is a slight dip in volume. I have investigated this and apparently it's normal. There are marks/small chips all over the body and also a couple of marks on the back of the neck which do not hinder playing in my opinion. Truss rod turns fine and works as it should. A truly great bass. Genuinely very very unhappy about selling this (it was made the same year as me!). Looks great, sounds great, great investment. logicred
I have had some PM's about the price. I won't go any lower, sorry ;-) It's a bargain at that price, if it doesn't sell I will sit on it.

Kempy535
Do you have any photos with the switch cover off? I am interested in seeing what the damage to the body is

logicred
Here is the image with the plate removed. I have no idea what would have been put here to be honest, completely baffles me. Intrigued too! If anyone has any ideas let me know. CH161
Interesting! Does it route to the control cavity? Can only think it may have been an XLR output jack?
logicred
Yes, there is a tiny hole which goes to the control cavity. I did not think about an XLR jack! You could be right there.
CH161
Any chance of pics of the bottom of both pickups and the codes on the bottom of the pots starting either 137 or 304...? It's a good price but obviously had some change at some point. Be good to see those pics.
logicred
Hi there, the first pot is 1377433, the second is 137something (solder in the way!) then next one is 137-738something. Hope this helps. I think there is already a pic of the bottom of the pickups with the date stamped on them. Hang on, no there isn't! Posted below. karlfer
Thank God this is rosewood, otherwise I would not be able to resist. GREAT price (imo) despite the hole. GLWTS
CH161
Looks to be original then except for that mysterious hole!

logicred
There is nothing on the neck heel (the face with the trussrod screw?).
CH161
Yes under the truss rod - any sign of a faded stamp or numbers at all? Red or green or black?
karlfer
Yes under the truss rod - any sign of a faded stamp or numbers at all? Red or green or black?
A lot of Fenders DID NOT have the date stamped on the heel of the neck at this time. There was quite a debate about it when I sold my genuine 74 a few years back. If I get the chance I will try to find it.
logicred
Nope definitely nothing there. I can't see any sign that there was something there either.

logicred
Just read that the pickup issue (ie both pickups work perfect when on their own, but when blended the sound gets slightly quieter) could be that the pickups are out of phase due to one of them being soldered in the wrong way. I will look into this as hopefully an easy fix.

logicred
Here is another bass which is identical to mine bar the extra plate and is £1000 more (but also without the original thumb rest, swapped scratchplate and tone pot and slightly more worn! ...)
