fishfry
Stock Duncan designed pups, these are supposed to have a hot output (?) but they seem weak to me, and don't cut through in a mix. Ditched the stock strings for Dean Barkley SR2000s, and they made a bit of a difference. Are the electronics not very good, should I consider changing these as well? The bass plays very nicely, what pups have you used as alternative?
Dad3353
What amp/cab..? What EQ..? What style of music, and what band formation..? I know almost nothing of these p/ups and strings, but I'd imagine lots of folks play regularly with both. There may be better suited to your purpose, but we'd need to know that purpose first. Over to you...
fishfry
I'm interested in hearing what other people's combinations are (not so much the strings). I run them through a EA head and cab, I also have a sadowsky outboard preamp. Even with the preamp, it doesn't seem to cut through so I'm looking at the pickups as the problem. I play all sorts of music, typical band setting of guitar/keys drums...
Conan
Ditched the stock strings for Dean Barkley
They add plenty of "Gnarl" to the tone, for sure!
Rumple
You could try replacing the pots, wiring and tone cap for better quality ones before splashing out on pups.
fishfry
Can you recommend what I should use? I don't know what out there is deemed to be quality parts. Thanks
0175westwood29
i had the everything standard for a good 8 months, in my metal band with new D'addario pro steels, and it cut thru really nicely, nice grind etc. didnt need to change really but just fancied getting a set of nordstrand pickups to throw in it, and it just made the out put and bit hotter (not masses tho) and made everything a bit better sounding all round. still have stock controls tho only the pups have changed. andy
