Telebass
As I currently have no gas, I have instead the wild idea of converting a C neck P bass (1.75 nut) to a tight-spaced fiver. I have heard of this being done, but not much knowledge seems to be available. Anyone here done it? KK Jale
I've got a Schaller 5-string conversion bridge stashed away somewhere.... want me to hunt it out?
Telebass
Ooh yes please, would be great!
KK Jale
Sorry for the late reply! I'll get amongst my boxes of clobber tomorrow.
Telebass
Amazing how many boxes of this stuff you can accumulate!
Kiwi
My steinie started off life as a four banger but the factory converted a number of them to five strings before the wide neck model was introduced. String spacing is 13mm at the bridge which is playable once you get used to it.
Telebass
Yup, thinking it would take some getting used to, but be worth it.
Kiwi
It's easier with lighter gauge strings.
KK Jale
Ooh yes please, would be great!
*phew* that was in a VERY obscure place! Actually it's a Wilkinson. Fits into Precision bass screw holes. The D string tunes at the bridge end, and is clamped up top by a natty dual-purpose replacement string tree. Comes with instructions, screws, a new nut blank, and even a B string… but I wouldn't use that, 'cos this all this stuff is about 20 years old. Brand new and unused, in knackered box
Telebass
PM me a price, if you're happy to sell, and I'll set about acquiring a Classic 50s Precision!
Telebass
Oh, and if I do this, and like it, anyone want a Squier P5?

No confused punters there, then.
Shockwave
You might want to check out the pole pieces line up on the classic 50. Would look weird. You may have to invest in rail style or closed pickups.
Telebass
Yup, thinking of something with rails.
Delberthot
When I did one to a knackered Hondo II Rick copy I used a Kahler bridge as it can be adjusted a million ways to get the string spacing correct. What I did for the nut was to buy one with the grooves just slightly marked out. I began with cutting the outer B & G strings using the grooves that were already there, put the A bang in the middle then cut the E & D strings in between those
Telebass
Great advice, thanks. Though I will probably chicken out and get luthier Tom Anfield in Saltash to do it - I have to see him about a new nut for my Kingman anyway. Telebass
Well, Rick (KK Jale) has sent me the Wilkinson 4+1, and a spiffy piece of work it is too! Now need a project bass to stick it on. Anyone know which cheapo Precision - a likes have the widest nut width?
Telebass
Still not done this yet. Must buy a cheap P-bass. How hard can it be?
