NOW SOLD: Fender Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV
£200

I bought this only recently with the idea that it would tide me over for a few weeks when I sent my ACG back to Alan to have some work done on it. However, I've decided to take the opportunity to get to know my fretless again instead.

These Squiers have had a lot of love on BC, which was really why I looked at one in the first place. Now I've been playing this for a few weeks I can understand why. They are ridiculous value for money - simply a hell of a lot of bass for not very much money, very well made and beautiful sounding. The Deluxe has the ebanol fingerboard and active preamp with Volume; Pickup Blend and Bass, Middle and Treble cut/boost controls. There's also a little preshape/slap switch which offers the traditional middle cut/ treble and bass boost setting for slap players. The active circuit is very musical and offers a terrific palette of sounds. I'd think you could quite happily gig with this for years without ever feeling the need to 'upgrade' to something Fender. I'm no expert on Fender or Jazz type basses specifically but I've seen many compare these Squiers very favourably to MIM and even MIA Fender basses. The bass is presently strung with Dunlop Super Bright Steel strings, 40-100 gauge, and sounds killer. I've still got the strings I took off though so will include those. Nut width is 1.5"; fingerboard radius 12" and 20mm string spacing at the bridge. Some snaps:

attachment=181918:P1240017.JPG]

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that the shaft of the treble knob on the stacked pot is slightly bent. This was how it arrived and I'm guessing it got a slight knock in the shop when it was on display. No crackles from the pot when turned and it rotates freely so there's no issues in use. Wasn't serious enough to send it back, just slightly annoying for those of us with a slight OCD bent - I include myself. :)

NOW SOLD. No trades please. Please check my feedback thread. Thanks for looking.

I've tried to weigh the bass on the bathroom scales after someone asked the question and - don't ask me why - they just wouldn't give a reading. I'm guessing it's a pretty average weight - somewhere between 8 - 9lbs. Doesn't seem overly heavy to me compared to other J types I've played anyway. Not much help, I know, but best I can do!

Basses are too light to activate bathroom scales. You need to weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bass and subtract the first result from the second, leaving you with the approximate weight of the bass. This is the time-honoured 'bathroom scales' method. :)

Very nice bass at a great price, by the way... hmm. Preamp, eh? Ebanol, eh? Hmm...

Discreet - thanks for stating what now seems to be blindingly obvious. And I'm supposed to have the brains in the family! Anyway, the difference between Fat and Fat + Bass = 9lbs. That said, as our bathroom scales don't do ounces (and therefore, I assume, round up or down to the nearest lb) I'm guessing that means it could be as little as a bit over 8lbs... :blink: :unsure:

Somewhere between 8 and 9lbs. Close enough! :)

These are great basses, I've got the black version (now with added tort pickguard) and they play and sound great. The preamp is well designed and (to my ears) transparent and the pickups are nice and quiet. That spindle can probably be easily straightened with gentle persuasion with some pliers - the upper knob is actually sitting a touch too high on the spindle so might just need refitting to get it straight. GLWTS.

Excuse the digression, but how did you fit a Jazz guard given the placement of the control knobs? :)
Answer: By ignoring the bell plate which isn't fitted on this bass, obviously! Glad I answered my own question! :D

Do you happen to have a pic of your Deluxe with the pickguard fitted? I'd be interested to see it...

Thanks very much, that works really well and would look fine with the sunburst too.
Now I think we'd better get out of Mark's For Sale thread! :D
