ATKs are beautiful basses. they do amazing stingray impressions, and decent precision impressions. they're not as smooth or versatile as the SR500, but they're definatly more of a rock bass. although i love my SR500 to bits and would never sell it, i've got to say if i had never owned it and had to choose one now, i'd go for the ATK.

it depends what music you play, if you're a jazz man, then i'd steer clear of the ATK. if you play punk or rock, then definatly give the ATK300 a try, see what you think.

however, just so you know, the ATK has a much thicker neck. precision width(ish). also, they're quite heavy, compared to the ibanez they are ridiculously heavy (although i did have the 5 string ATK whereas i have the 4 string SR500).

play one, try it out, see what you think!

Always had Ibanez's, got two guitars by them at the mo, an SZ fitted with Bare Knuckles & an Artcore Custom.
My first bass was a GIO 4 string, also had a RD605 which a sold on this very forum and now I've just purchased this '93 SR1306PD (also over in bass porn)


I also have use of this old girl (its my girlfriends) silver series precision from '77. just a touch "road-worn"






Some of the best instruments ive had the pleasure of playing, esp for the prices.

Here are my two Ibanez 5 strings - an old SR705 and an SR1205. I've upgraded the pickups in the SR1205 - the ones in there did not work well with the low B. I've got my eye out for an SR1206 as my next purchase. I love the Ibanez range - I also have an old PJ and I sold my SRX500 a few months back.

My Ibanez Roadster RS800 BS 1979 !!



So, after endless dramas about paying for this guitar in the first place, then thinking it was maybe too heavy for me and having some trouble with string tone, I decided to spend a small amount of time fixing it up. I cleaned it up, added new knobs, shielded the control compartment with copper foil (as it was prone to buzzing when near the amp), swapped the strings for DR Extra Life Red Devils, bought a new extra comfort strap (plus Schaller locks), set intonation and string height, and tweaked the pickup height. It now sounds absoultely beautiful - A real punchy Phil Lynott sound

I Love all the the Classic Ibanez, I tried to find an Ibanez section in Gear Porn but
haven't seen one.

Thanks! The GK rig has been upgraded. The Ibanez basses are a sight to behold. The SR1205 is so good that I have no real desire to play a different bass, let alone purchase one. It's a full-on GAS killer!

Yes. I'm very happy with it! Just waiting to see how it sounds with the band after its new setup.

Build is fantastically good - amazing how good the action is considering the beating it seems to have got over its 31 year lifespan..

Perhaps you should just start a new thread for classic Ibbys on the Gear Porn section.

I had the '924 - very very similar to yours but the finish was cherry sunburst and front pickup was essentially a single coil in P mode. I too regrert selling mine and I'd still fancy getting another (ha!) The one I really wanted was the polar white MC924 as usd by Mike Porcaro in the "Rosanna" video, but I couldn't scare up enough money.

I've had two of these in the past. The first was SERIOUSLY heavy and I ended up putting Reflex active pickups on it for some reason. The second one was "lent" to my brother, who later relocated to North Carolina and took it with him! I was temporarily reunited with it in 2006 when we went over to organise his funeral, but I had no means of getting it home. His widow has probably got rid of it by now.

Is there any point upgrading the PSNDJ p/u's on my GSR 180. I dont have the cash to buy a new bass just yet and am wondering if this is an ok upgrade.
I know some Ib's have the MEC p/u's which look the same size. will they fit?

My first bass was a red GSR200, it was great!!!

In a school boy error moment I traded it for a Schecter Stiletto Custom which I have never really got on with, this has curtailed my playing and I really want to change that. I am glad I saw this Ibanez thread as I am hoping you will all agree that going back to Ibanez is the way forward. I am looking at one of the short scale Artcore Semi's. I'm not sure what the Schecter is worth but it will be going to help fund the change!!!

I feel like replacing the pickup for either an SPB-1 or SPB-3, replacing the pots because they're quite old (not the covers though) and a new bridge too, possibly badass II
Not sure whether to sand off the body and re-lacquer it. It's quite damaged as you can see in the added picture. I will definitely stay with the colours (eg: not painting it).
