Adam Wiseman
Hi all Finally purchased my dream bass, walnut Rickenbacker 4003 and will be picking it up sometime this week. Can anyone advise on what string gauges would be good for drop C tuning? I will be having it set up straight away. Many thanks
Norris
I assume the same that you'd use for the low B on a 5 string
thodrik
D'addario do a balanced tension set of 120-50. That is what I used when tuned to drop C, as in drop D but a whole tone lower on all strings.
Cosmo Valdemar
I assume the same that you'd use for the low B on a 5 string
That would be a bit tight... assuming the OP is in the heavier music realm, a bit of flop from a drop-tuned 4 string can be beneficial, adding some extra snarl and aggression all of it's own. It's all down to personal preference of course but for years I played in low C# tuning and found Rotosound 50-110 more than up to the job. I much prefer a downt-tuned 4 to a standard 5 in most cases. Bear in mind Troy Sanders from Mastodon frequesntly tunes to drop A and a 'standard' 105 works for him.
Adam Wiseman
Thank you all for your replies. Thodrick, I think I will give that 120-50 set a go.
