Er, not sure if Thom has ever owned the original Starchild, he does however own the very first JayDee bass that was built for Richard Ford - #001. Mark King sold the Starchild to the Bass Centre and it was bought in '98 by Morgan! Its a very heavy bass, the Kahler trem adds some weight. Are you getting hexagonal knobs on yours? Would be interesting to know how many 'Starchilds' John has made!! Might just ask him! With my Starchild I asked John to keep it as close to the original as possible. Be interesting to see the string spacing on yours - my Alembic (name dropping again) has a very narrow spacing and it plays itself - I take it that your Starchild is long scale - the neck looked slightly shorter in the pics - may just have been the angle etc Once I get sorted money-wise, Im going to get John to build me a new bass, based on the GA24 but slightly modded, with a medium scale neck. I love the tone of the GA bass, mainly due to the pickup placement - since I've got the Classic, (and the Calibas and a Roadie!) will be nice to have something different! Although the shorter scale of the King Basses is much more comfortable I do like the long scale of the Alembo so I thought it might be nicer to have another long scale! The sound of the GA24 is more 'modern' in a way and seems much tighter...well to my ears anyway (hmmm, that reminds me, must pop down to Boots and get some wax removal stuff before the weekend's gig onslaught...). Although you can still get some RRRAAAWWW sounds off the bridge pick up on it's own. Lavverly!! What mods are you thinking of apart from the neck length? Although he's only 2 it would be a great way of getting him into bass from an early age! (spot the over-zealous parent!) [/quote] Sounds like you've just created my perfect Jaydee, as that's my spacing preference too. One day; I've actually been planning to get one of these for years (or something very similar, maybe a bit more of a hybrid) but never got round to it. When I use to have mine, we played rock in a psychadelic-guitar-feedback style and it didn't sit right in the mix, it recorded beautifully, with a deep, bell-like tone for chords but live it got a little lost. He put an EMG humbucker in with a 2eq stack knob when the original broke, also a Hollis pre-amp to give a kick up the mids. This is my first fretless and I'm loving it. Work is preventing me from getting out and playing more but I'm going to make a serious effort to get going. The 80's mags are fantastic - I've got some old Guitarist mags dating back to '84 and the range of gear that was available back then was inspirational - especially now that us keen teenage players back then are fast approaching 40 years of age!
