Thanks Dave... All getting a bit exciting now as we're maybe just over 2 weeks away from delivery!!!

I think Thom had the original Starchild at some point!!

Wahey!

Superb stuff Matt (Moo!) - I'm not at ALL envious (he says)! (...should get Neptune/Aqua back soon from John in the new livery! - sorry 4000, she's going trans cherry red).

Er, not sure if Thom has ever owned the original Starchild, he does however own the very first JayDee bass that was built for Richard Ford - #001. Mark King sold the Starchild to the Bass Centre and it was bought in '98 by Morgan! Its a very heavy bass, the Kahler trem adds some weight.

Are you getting hexagonal knobs on yours? Looks fantastic - really great! Thom's Starchild is obviously not an exact replica but its a lovely bass all the same!

Cheers!

Hey Nick

I'm looking forward to seeing yours when it comes back... Very sexy bass!! You're right, Thom has (or had) lots of JayDee's but not the original Starchild. Would be interesting to know how many 'Starchilds' John has made!! Might just ask him!

With my Starchild I asked John to keep it as close to the original as possible. Only thing I really wanted was a 16.5mm string spacing!

So we'll see in maybe 2 weeks what she looks like!

:)

Might just drop in to John's sometime soon....!

Be interesting to see the string spacing on yours - my Alembic (name dropping again) has a very narrow spacing and it plays itself - I take it that your Starchild is long scale - the neck looked slightly shorter in the pics - may just have been the angle etc

Once I get sorted money-wise, Im going to get John to build me a new bass, based on the GA24 but slightly modded, with a medium scale neck. I love the tone of the GA bass, mainly due to the pickup placement - since I've got the Classic, (and the Calibas and a Roadie!) will be nice to have something different! Miss my cherry-yoghurt GA...!

I have 16.5mm on all my King Basses and also on my MK Alembic... The Alembo really does play itself!!! Unbelievable action on it!

One of the next basses I order will be an original cherry red Series I JayDee... Just like Marks first one. Just love that bass. Then a pink one... Then a blonde Alembic MK... Then, then, then!! THEN I'LL GET MY VIGIER BACK :)

Calm down dear!

Just to let everyone know, Matt used to own THE Arpege! And its MINE, all MINE now! Mwahahahaha. What a small world eh?!

PS - is your Starchild long scale???????

Yes it is... Although the shorter scale of the King Basses is much more comfortable I do like the long scale of the Alembo so I thought it might be nicer to have another long scale!

Who knows until I get the bloody thing!

Might be a post 'Child needs new family... Likes looking to the night sky!'

Hello chaps! Ahh, the cross-forum pollenation continues! Moo my man, great to 'see' you again over here on Basschat!

Totally agree with your comments Nick. The sound of the GA24 is more 'modern' in a way and seems much tighter...well to my ears anyway (hmmm, that reminds me, must pop down to Boots and get some wax removal stuff before the weekend's gig onslaught...). Although you can still get some RRRAAAWWW sounds off the bridge pick up on it's own. Lavverly!!

What mods are you thinking of apart from the neck length? I might just let you blag my custom's headstock shape if you're a good boy!!! :)

Hey, I wonder if John could make a mini scaled-down Starchild for my little boy?!! Although he's only 2 it would be a great way of getting him into bass from an early age! (spot the over-zealous parent!)

There's a nice link since the song playing on the car CD when we rushed to hospital to deliver him was Starchild by Jamiroquai! "That Cooperman, comin' down, oooh-oooh"...

Anyway, I'll shut up now and go do some work...

Hallo!

I'm thinking about a more `Alembicised' body, bringing the horns level, but retaining the horn shape! Plus some other special bits!!

Sounds like you've just created my perfect Jaydee, as that's my spacing preference too. One day; I've actually been planning to get one of these for years (or something very similar, maybe a bit more of a hybrid) but never got round to it. As there's not much left for me to go for maybe it's not too far off.

I think John's prices are pretty bloody reasonable for the standard models. The cost options add a fair whack though. I think the Calibas basses are the nicest and most distinctive out of the whole range.

I just clicked on the price list link and the website is completely different to the one I access when I Google Jaydee. It's obviously been updated, but when I Google it I get an old version. Weird.

Looks like a Series III - can't see a funk groove which would define a Series II model. Many of the late 80's models were Series III's - I had one in '88 when I was 17!!!

Meant to say, there are two JD sites - one is the old version...
Here's an old (very old) photo of me with my Mark King bass.

I guess I'm about 18 here, so that's about 1990, I think I got it in about 1987.

What series would this be ?.
That's a great photo Kev, what kind of music did your band do then?
When I use to have mine, we played rock in a psychadelic-guitar-feedback style :) and it didn't sit right in the mix, it recorded beautifully, with a deep, bell-like tone for chords but live it got a little lost.

My Jaydee Roadie fretless bought from Rich a while back. He put an EMG humbucker in with a 2eq stack knob when the original broke, also a Hollis pre-amp to give a kick up the mids. This is my first fretless and I'm loving it. Work is preventing me from getting out and playing more but I'm going to make a serious effort to get going.
Hi Steve

It was sort of funky rocky type indie stuff, quite hard to describe really, a mix of all of our different influences, we didn't worry about what we played, so my jazzy/funky lines were allowed as were the lead guitarists Holdsworth type solos. The drummer was really into his rock, and the rhythm player was into laid back indie stuff like the Smiths.
The singer had an amazing voice, and was really into funk and Jimi Hendrix.
Hi Kev what were you called?

Great stuff Kev!

I recall that mag - very good, wonder what happened to it? - they also reviewed a Roadie fretless bass, bit like Kol's! Hi Kol! Good review there - they really liked the basses! The 80's mags are fantastic - I've got some old Guitarist mags dating back to '84 and the range of gear that was available back then was inspirational - especially now that us keen teenage players back then are fast approaching 40 years of age! Scary eh??
