seashell Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 It was four years ago this Saturday that I went for my first bass lesson. I was a nervous middle aged lady with a Marlin Sidewinder, left behind in my flat by an Ex, (The Marlin I mean, though it applied to me too! ) Since then I have:

been in a dreadful band
formed a better band
made loads of new friends on Basschat and beyond
met loads of inspiring people including John Paul Jones and Peter Hook
started to play at jam sessions with whoever will put up with me
been beating men back with sticks
It is such a brilliant feeling to get up and play in front of an audience. Sometimes I feel as though I have been plucked out of my old life and dropped into someone else's. To any beginners out there I would say, go for it, bloody well grab it by the neck and go for it. Play it every night till your fingers bleed (well, maybe not quite ). Summon up all your courage and get out there and inflict it on an audience. Just do it! It may not bring you fame, it may not bring you fortune, but it will bring you joy. love seashell xx Quote
FlatEric Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Nice. A warm and fuzzy tale. Keep up the good work. Quote

Seen the bruises. Seriously though this is more than I did in my first 10 years or more. But it was pre internet....feeling old now. Quote

planer Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Good for you hon, long may it continue! I find these 'look what I've done' threads very inspiring. Shame then that I am work in the middle of nowhere, and my bass is 55 miles away... Quote

Happy Jack Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I too have been beating off men with sticks. I call them "drummers". I'm running almost exactly five years ahead of you, Shell. Only there wasn't an ex involved ... it was actually my daughter (then aged 14). Quote

seashell Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015
Nice post. Good on you. Did you keep the Marlin? Nice to hang on to the first bass
No, six months later I traded it in for a Mexican Fender P. Which is my main and beloved bass now. But I remember the Marlin with affection. Quote
