Trans colours were nearly always ash. Was this one of the first ones with the oiled neck? I had a 1990 a few years back which maybe was one of the last with a satin laquer all over. Lovely bass btw. Lovely bass btw.[/quote] I'm not sure tbh, my Stingray history isn't good....Gigged the bass all thru the weekend in 3 different situations and i gotta say it was just fantastic...really sits well in the mix (especially a bluesy/funk setting with the mutes on the E and slightly on A) The bass really cut through better than my 5 string Sei....Why is that with older basses?! martthebass Posted October 10, 2010 Share Posted October 10, 2010 Well it's taken a while to replace the Ray 4H Fretless that I (foolishly) sold a few months back believing I wanted a Jazz (again.....I will never learn). I was unable to snag exactly what I was looking at (price mainly......had to cut a few corners, credit crunch and all that) but I saw a nice Ray5H unlined fretless on evil bay and decided to take a punt. It's a 1998 trans red and in remarkably good nick for the year. It's needed a little rod tweak to get the action how I like it and I'm going to have to change the Roto flats (and probably the matt black pg at some point for a nice abalone or black pearl once I've made my mind up whether 5 string F'less is for me) for some D'addarios. I keep wanting another Jazz, but Im thinking Sterling 4 H or Big Al 4 H instead. I just know Ill get the Jazz and miss the sheer ummph of the EBMM. The neck is to my taste one of the absolute best I've ever had on a fivestring, playability is just awsome and the tonal versatility is wicked. I've always been happy with the single H but I'd love to try an HS for comparisons sake. I could live without the humbucker in series for the extra tones I could get from the single coil I'm definetely after another,this time with a rosewood board. BB3000S Posted October 26, 2010 Share Posted October 26, 2010 The EBMM madness goes on in the house of BB3000S - these are the final (?) two additions to my EBMM collection, after having gone through a whole lot of wonderful basses the last couple of years I've come to realize that EBMM Stingray is the bass for me. Just love the feel and sound. As I was increasing my Stingray quota I could not resist the temptation to try out an EBMM Big Al as well - and boy am I glad I did. Really cool bass with loads of tonal options, almost all of them amazingly good. The 4band Eq however is not an immediate love, much prefer the SR 3band. The Eq might grow on me over time, but there's hardly a need for it IMO as it sounds just wonderful in passive. The middle PU in particular is wonderful - on its own it's a real P-bass killer, and together with the bridge PU the bass has a wonderful voice all its own. The Stingray 4HH is one of 21 4HH's in Dargie Delight - a finish EBMM offered for a time window of only two weeks back in 2007. Apart from the looks it's truly a great Stingray. I loaned one to see if I liked it before I ordered, and I found a small treble cut, plus a small low mid bump, was perfect. What I found clever was that there was barely any volume difference between passive and active. The only setting that sounded a little louder was all buttons up, bridge plus middle pup in series.
