I love your new bass Sam, btw! I looked at that one when the previous owner first put it up for sale, but it was way over budget for me at the time, so I ended up getting my piezo Ray instead. Are you pleased with the sounds available from the HH setup?

thanks! yeah i'm loving it so far, there's a lot there tonally, and the mid band is really cool, i've never had that on a bass before and it's nice to have it there. It needs some new strings though before i can really say what i think, it's sounding a little dull right now. I'm still mulling over a sterling or bongo though, the bongo mainly because i like to boost the hell out of the treble sometimes and it has that extra headroom, and the sterling because i'm a girl and prefer a smaller bass :) Possibly a 5er too.... there's so much to choose!

Heh! As I was saying, you're going to have to become known as "High-End Bassist" from now on. :)

Yes, I like to boost the hell out of things at times as well. Really loving the Ray sound at the moment. I'm actually very surprised at how close the Stingray 5 is to a Status in how the sound responds as you play. I can see why people hum and har between the two now.
 it just doesn't have the same ring to it does it?

shockingly enough, i've never tried a status, though i would like to. I guess the body shape just does't really appeal to me. Neither does the concept of more expensive double ball strings, i can't afford regular strings as it is
The good news is that the Status basses take either single or double ball end strings... :)
OK, here's my 2008 SR4. I took some pics recently as I was thinking about selling. Turns out I'm a bit reluctant to part with it! :)

That'll be this very weekend, Steve. I'll use the piezo Ray for one of the evenings at Mr.B's in Barlow, Chesterfield & may give the Stingray 5 a road test on Sunday in Gainsborough. I've actually put a set of Status Hotwire 35-120's on the 5. Suits it really well. No buzz and excellent flexibility. I may yet change it over to my usual 40-guage DR Fatbeams at some point. We'll see...

Now I'd really be interested to know how you go with the 35-120's.
I've always mainly run 40-125's over the years (Elites, Trace, Rotosound, etc.) but have wondered about lightening the guage a little.
Just not sure how my old Alnico would deal with it?

I love the feel of it on the 35-120's. It's extremely flexible & there doesn't seem to be any discernable loss of tone. They actually suit the bass very well, even the lighter B-string has plenty of tension and growl to it.

The 4-string Stingray piezo has the FatBeams on it, 40-100. DR strings always seem to be much softer anyway, so that set suits the Ray down to the ground. I briefly had some 40-100 Rotos on my Sterling Ray 34 & they had far too much tension. Shows how much difference there is between different brands!

Yeh, I must admit, I'm off and on with Rotosounds at the moment though currently have their flats on my fretless Ray. Might just go for some DR's next time around for the 5.

Here are mine - or more correctly here's my 30th Anniversary Stingray (mahogany body, birdseye neck in red) and my Electric Blue SR4HH that I've just parted ways with. Wonderful basses, the 30th I've had for quite some time and just love to bits. The HH is a really exceptional bass, it is very close to the 30th in H mode, and the extra H adds an amazing amount of grind and grit as well as Hi tech alternatives. Would have loved a low B on it though - hope someday to lay my hands on a 20th Anniversary SR5HH. :)

Being an aficionado of MusicMan basses for 25 years now, I thought it only right to add my '79 black & maple StingRay 4 and my '91 teal & maple StingRay 5.

Once I've recharged the batteries on my camera, I'll upload pics of my black '83 Cutlass I too... :)

Yes, see that you do, sir!
Actually, I do like that SR5. Might have to do a spot of Teal hunting myself!!

As promised, piccies of my '83 Cutlass I - purchased 2nd hand from the Bass Centre in Wapping back in '88.

All original - apart from the tuners which were replaced 5 years ago with pukka MusicMan replacements (the originals tarnished something rotten, but I still have them laying around somewhere).

Enjoy!
