I recently became a member in the Musicman owner's club :)

Here's my fretless Stingray 5 from 1993, in the trans white (Mary kay) finish. Can't stop playing the damn thing

That looks a beaut!
Nice tort guard, too. Just wondering if it's original or fitted later?

I think it's the original one. The top layer of it (the tort bit) is even starting to Peel back a little around the edges, especially near the fingerboard.

The pau ferro board is absolutely immaculate! Loving the warmth from it. That and flatwounds seem to tame the trademark MM "Boing" which is desirable on a fretless I think. Gets the Pino Paul Young vibe no probs :)

Slight bit of yellowing here and there on the finish, I dunno if this is common with the Mary Kays ...?

glad your having fun Bobby :D
if memory serves there were only 35 made in the mary kaye finish ,there's a couple of threads on the ernie ball site .
That's the original guard too that they put on them, lot of them seem to have suffered from that curling up thing .

Here's mine, now it also has dark chrome knobs that are not pictured in the photo.

Sweet bass!
Which strings do you use? I'm rocking a fretless Stingray 5 myself and I was thinking of trying a set of D'addario Chromes on mine. What I'd really like are TI Jazz Flats but I can't justify the extra price of the B string at the moment.

Only just got the bass to be honest. I think it's got Roto flats on it, which sound fine to my ears. Been toying with trying Chromes myself though, wondering if they'll have a little more sustain to them, difficult to find in a flatwound I know...

After the departure of my old 1988 'Ray, here is the substitute :) wine red, some birdseye, 1989 serial number and 1990 features

Not sure if I have posted this before...

Here is the one that got away. I stupidly sold it a few years ago and have regretted it pretty much everyday since. If I knew where it was now I'd do almost anything to get it back! It had one of the best maple necks I have ever seen.

I cannot wait until I get to add an addition to this thread. What I wouldn't give for a Stringray...

They're expensive sure. But considering the sheer amount of bass you can get for around £700 delivered to your door (second hand prices here atm) they're actually extremely good value!

Looks like I'd "give" around £700 and retain my bodily organs then! Better start saving!

Here's my baby, it started life as a standard single pup SR5 with a natural finish

It's got 2 Nordstrand pickups, a John East Preamp with bass, sweepable mid and treble controls, a (3 way) pickup selector switch and a coil tap switch.

All the work, including the translucent blue finish was done by Chris Mcintyre at http://www.mcintyreguitars.com/

It's set up really nicely, and I love the finish, but more importantly it sounds amazing, the East pre is great it's almost too much control and with the bridge pup on it sounds like a Stingray, the neck pup is a bit boomier and together they sound exactly as I hoped it's mellower than a stingray but still agressive and ballsy. Running either pup as a sigle coil sounds a little thin, but it might work in certain band situations, but the 2 together as single coils sound lovely not quite a jazz but maybe a stingray/jazz hybrid.

I still haven't spent alot of time playing with the tone controls, so I'm sure I'll fine tune all the combinations to sound even better.
