I played around with the pickguards today. Ended up reverting to the original ones. You’ve seen before the matt black…

The copper with black pickguard really works, but I prefer it on the sparkle, even better than the black matt… may venture with a pearloid pickguard at some point for the dropped copper.

I bought a white cover for my bass recently just to try. It’s slightly whiter than the body (as I thought it would be) so probably won’t use it.

Leave the cover in a window, direct sunlight for a good while that will darken it up, I’ve done that myself in the past

Good idea, thanks - weirdly a chap just posted a similar thing on TB, he put the cover in some coffee for a bit which darkened it just enough.

If anyone is into specific trades....

Withdrawn - What was I thinking!!!??? There's not better (for me) than these Specials - I'll pop cobalt rounds on the coppery, flatwound cobalts on the starboi :D

I will treat myself to a couple pickguards, B/W/B matte for the sparkle, White pearl for the Copper.

So, I may be going off track here, apols if so - what strings do you use on your stingrays?

I am a fashion victim and would love EB strings with my MM's, any other option feels like wearing Jordans with Adidas socks lol, but guys I really have tried.

I've tried regular slinky's (not too great but okay enough, meh), cobalts (great output but lacking mids to my liking? feels like steel strings) and cobalt flat wounds (how sticky/grabby are they? gosh! and tension for days! Big let down here)... So, much to my "disappointment" I'm back to D'addario.

I wanted one on rounds, the other one on flats - for rounds I went for my trusty NYXL, and surprise! First time I try the Chromes flat wounds... REALLY LIKED THEM!!! They're what the EB flats announce (flats that sound like rounds) but made real and with a much more pleasant feeling on the fingers - smoothest I have tried is Labella but for the more aggressive music we play (punk rock, but with the B3K on the HX effects maxed up), the Chromes will be the ones to stay.

..... I still feel like a brand traitor :D

Best,

Ander.

Hm! DR Is more neutral territory - I used to like the nickel lo rider and the quantum nickel pure blues too, but I've never tried the DR flats - would need them to be 'round wound' output if that makes sense, with enough treble too...!

I had some on order from bass direct but they were out of stock for so long I changed to the old trusty Ti jazz flats .

I’ve heard good things about them though

I Play a 2EQ Fretless Stingray with Chromes (105 E)

Hmmm...! I am traditionally a 45-105 guy, and was surprised I couldn't find 45-105 for Chromes - somewhat disappointed, BUT after having installed the 45-100, I am happy as the tension is pretty even and equivalent to a round wound 45-105 (actually a tad bit more if you look at the numbers at the back of the package).

I have a feeling 45-105 would be too heavy for me on Chromes flats.

Funny enough, I love how balance is the sound, to the point it's making me consider 45-100 on the NYXL round wounds...!

Elixir 40-95s are the only rounds I use. They last literally two years or more and feel amazing. I also play in D and the tension suits me perfectly; I like a bit of clank and that plasticy juicy midrange from a low action on a ray. Flats I use on my P are Labella 760fx, I did try them on the ray and they sounded great but I missed the juice. My Ray is my ‘go to’ as it sits perfectly between my J which I might lean towards for more slappy or nuanced finger style and the P which is your usual dependable tugboat and a great leveller.

I’m considering doing something a bit crazy but that many a folk here would approve of…. Starts with Special, ends with 5HH….

NOS….

I’ve never tried an HH model but the demos I’ve heard make me think I wouldn’t use any of the ‘extra’ sounds… maybe I need to try one.

Hmmm….! I’ve got the 4H so thinking as I’m off to studio to record EP and whatnot a 5HH may be handy… those single coil tones in position 2 & 4 sound pretty juicy…!

Ped nails the very definition of the P bass tone.

Having seemingly moved to short scale basses in the last year or so, I can confidently say that my JMJ Mustang (which sounds just like my old ‘63 P) and shorty ‘Ray (the series/single/parallel switch is super useful) cover all the fretted tones I usually need. A short ‘Ray fretless added to the pack would see me complete.
