Drax Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Anyone tried this? Also - tying a knot in a broken string? These are hard times. Quote
ubit Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 It doesn't work that good. I've tried it. I stick mine in the dishwasher, works a treat! Quote
Geek99 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 i tried tying them, but only where I have stupidly cut them too short at the headstock (and arguably, where it matters less) - it worked well enough Quote
Weststarx Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I've never actually tried any of these methods of cleaning the strings, is it actually worth doing or will it just knacker the strings in a different way? Quote
yorks5stringer Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I'm sure this video has been commented on before but can't be arsed to look for it! Quote
JTUK Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 When a string goes off, it is just as much about the feel as the sound.. I find the feel comes first and really determines the time to change.. Quote
lonestar Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) I've tried boiling strings but if they're knackered any iway it brightens them up for a short while and then they die prhetty quickly. Fine if you're skint but new strings are the answer. Can't imagine DK's , excellent tutor though he is, method is much more effective. Edited January 29, 2015 by lonestar Quote

DaytonaRik Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I find cleaning/fast fret before and after gigs tend to keep them longer lasting anyway! Prevention being better than a cure and all that? Quote
King Tut Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I sometimes put mine in a stone polisher (cylindrical rotating drum) with some white spirit for about 15 mins. Brightens em up for a bit. Not sure how much of the dullness is due to grime in the windings and how much is due to over stretchedress (new technical term there). My method will clean em but can't take out the stretch obviously! Quote
MoonBassAlpha Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I'd say grime is the major culprit Quote
Mudpup Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Pop mine in meths overnight and it doubles the zing life Quote

Cameronj279 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Found it worked for maybe half an hour. But I imagine the damage to frets of doing this very often would end up costing more than a pack of Elixirs. Quote
