lowendgalore Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) Soo as it says.... Im talking tone only here, not anything to do with playing... Just the tone and the mix! What tracks stand out for you? You can list the engineer and bass player if you fancy! Im gonna start with one saying i listened to the album from the film Ratatouille and a song called "Le Festin" and it stood out to me, the bass tone is lovely and phat and fluffy and so well defined! Of course... Abe Laboriel played on it which could have part to do with it! But yeah sounded good! Needless to say- YouTube quality usually doesnt cut it for tone analysing ! Haha Edited January 31, 2015 by lowendgalore Quote
Weststarx Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 People will probably laugh, but for me my favourite bass tone is Mark Hoppus and Blink 182 'Whats My Age Again' and Nate Mendal's in the intro to Foo Fighters 'My Hero'. Both make me want to pick up the bass! Quote
lowendgalore Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Sweet, i will check these out! Quote
chris_b Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Nathan East with Clapton on River Of Tears, live version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDskctp8O-o Reggie McBride on any Keb Mo record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPAbNCALzUA Those 2 guys get the best tone I've heard from a bass. Quote

Matt Freeman at his toe tapping best, nothing flash, solid ska line for the verse and a catchy as *&%$ chorus, so much fun to play. Love his tone and the way it sits in the mix. paul h Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I love Seiji Kameda's tone on pretty much all of the Tokyo Incidents stuff... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPGupG0ZgVM Quote
scalpy Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Krist novoselic on the nevermind album. Johnny colt- black crowes, southern harmony. Both crucially pick players. Can I play with a pick? Nah. Quote
Bassman Steve Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 John Deacon - Bohemian Rhapsody Pino - Everything Must Change (Paul Young) In both cases pretty much the stock sound of the instrument but perfectly recorded and using the sound in the best way. IMO of course. Quote
franzbassist Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Martin Turner's tone on Wishbone Ash's "Argus" is pretty lush. Quote
paulbass Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I love this tone http://youtu.be/ag22NiOnTGI Quote
JTUK Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I'm liking this atm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXtbJ31Fw-0 Quote
ratman Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Most of the songs on the Foo Fighters Wasting Light album have a killer bass tone. There's a lovely depth to Nate Mendel's bass that underpins the songs, but it cuts through a treat too. The whole thing is really well mixed. Butch Vig at his best, again. Quote
Lozz196 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Jeff Rouses tone on Duff McKagans Loadeds first album, Dark Days is excellent - real Precision/Ampeg tone. Quote
merello Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I always go back to Tony Levin on the So album by Gabriel. Love JJB on The Raven. Brad Paisley's 'This Is Country Music' makes a point of attributing every song as 'Fender Precision Bass' and it;s a lovely deep undercoat to his magic. Quote
mingsta Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I loved Randy Hope Taylor's tone on the incognito positivity album. Quote
Hobbayne Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Bruce Foxtons tone on the Jams 'All Mod Cons' album. Mr Clean is my personal favourite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1V7fYeBAkc Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The last Paramore album has a killer bass mix! Makes me want a Gibson grabber. Quote
Old_Ben Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Think Mother Mary by Black Label Society does it for me http://youtu.be/gqM8rooJrHQ Quote
40hz Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Kim Deal's tone on dig for fire, that is just beautiful! The Pixies as a band always had a great mix. Sounds like her Aria Cardinal bass on this particular track, although she used a P around this era too. Quote
JapanAxe Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Anything Bruce Thomas played with Elvis Costello & the Attractions. Quote
PaulWarning Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 JJ Burnell on Hanging around, but any rock bass that's sits in the mix so I can actually hear it, it's so often buried so deep the only way I can figure out what they're doing is to raise it 2 octaves, the upside being you can just does bash away on the root and get away with it Quote
visog Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I'll pitch in for the clanklicious Mr Squire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHl6sDLX8tQ Quote
theyellowcar Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 +1 for Mark Hoppus. The track that always stands out for me is Online Songs. His tone during the intro is incredible, I have never been able to replicate the 'bounce' that it has in all my years of playing. Quote
bartelby Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) This album has one of my favourite bass tones ever recorded: Jump to about 15:00 for a fine bit to sample. Obviously youTube does it's best to kill the mix. Edited January 31, 2015 by bartelby Quote
