Old Man Riva
(First post, so here goes...) Really like Don't Interrupt the Sorrow off Joni Mitchell's Hissing of the Summer Lawns. It's played by Wilton Felder and sounds like a P-Bass with a pick and flats. Or is it a Jazz Bass with fingers and flats. Or... He also played the great bass line on I Want You Back by The Jackson 5 and is a top sax player.. An annoyingly good musician. operative451
This is my benchmark as to 'what a bass sounds like': https://www.youtube....h?v=_mSmOcmk7uQ I actually use this as a reference when i'm fiddling with amps and boxes: https://www.youtube....h?v=l_2RZzxr2J4 Can never get the flipping embedding to work, sorry!! joe.nemms
I am fond of Eddie Jackson of Queensryches stuff - Spector/Zon basses. Anything off of Operation Mindcrime and 'Della Brown' off of Empire.

Tech
Great thread, loving listening to these suggestions. For me, two very different bass tones. When I started out over a decade ago this is the bass sound that drove me crazy: Rex Brown + production making that bass sound like a pack of growling lions! So cool. Now, this is much more my cup of tea - James Jamerson and the Fender P-Bass:
dmccombe7
Geddy's tone on this has always been an influence. http://youtu.be/ZXH-DyjsBd0 Jack Bruce from Over The Top era http://youtu.be/yD8PxxfZMYI Dave
wombatboter
There are discussions who played this (even people who think this is keyboard but I doubt that) but I always thought it was Dean Garcia on a Wal bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEBU9lTnqpI
Nicko
If I could only ever have one sound it would be this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmJxtgmsqAE
Skybone
Been listening to loads of old rock/punk & goth stuff recently... Budgie from Siouxsie & The Banshee's had a killer sound, as did the Captain in the early Damned singles. Craig Adams always managed to get a great sound in the Sisters/The Mission & Coloursound (Mike Peters & Billy Duffy). Tony Pettitt from The Fields of the Nephilim, superb.
