andytoad Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015
Are we talking about a modern Gibson SG bass (three knobs, volume/volume/tone)? If so, the neck pickup is not a traditional sidewinder mudbucker, but a Gibson TB+ (humbucker, blades, ceramic magnets) masquerading as one, complete with fake pole pieces. I know this because I took the one out of my Midtown Standard. Also, see http://music-electro...474/#post334486 Incidentally, that's my shout for a bigger bass using the same pickup jammed up against the heel of the neck, either a Midtown Standard or a Midtown Signature. Sure, it's chambered, but I doubt it'll make a lot of difference. The bigger body and 34" scale will make it feel a bit more in proportion
yes its the modern SG, id try a tele, if it had the same sound. i like my vintage basses, so that could be a possibility! andytoad Posted February 5, 2015 Author Posted February 5, 2015
+1 if it sounds great and plays great, looks are a minor consideration.
thinkin' you could be right... Quote
uk_lefty Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Paul_S thank you for posting a link to AWB! Absolutely love them, "Put it where you want it" is an all time favourite of mine. Oh yeah... basses. If your friend leaves it with you that long I think it's yours already surely?! Quote
Donnyboy Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015
i have had my mates gibson sg bass in my cupboard for almost a year, never played it, diddnt like em. i took it to practice, wow, the tone from the neck pu is probably what i jave been searching for from year dot, neck feels great, the bass feels really sensitive, inlike my fenders. now, heres the problem; im stocky, the wife would say i could loose a few pounds, the sg bass therefore looks like a silly little imitation girly bass. damn, what sould i do, go with the sg and face a lifetime of mocking from my fellow muscians (the guitarist feels particularly proud to 'have a larger one for once') or keep searching for the one? indeed, does anyone ever find the one? yours confused...... andytoad
Quote

anDy LAKIN Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 why does the guitarist feel prouder for having a larger one for once? does he only have a small one and anyway its what you do with it that counts, as well as fingering technique too of course Quote

My top tip for the OP (apart from upsetting the fairer sex) is to source a Yamaha BB714BS - it will do everything you desire in spades and a whole lot more. The only problem is that they are scarce...and I am not selling mine. Quote
Number6 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 SG's look cool whoever plays them.....FACT Quote
Shaggy Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Always been into old Gibsons, but for some reason I've never much liked the ergonomics of the EB-0 / EB-3 - much prefer the EB-2 / EB-2D. IMHO the ultimate bass of this "type" is the Ovation Magnum, which is also all-mahogany and set neck, though the Fender Tele bass with the big neck 'buckler mentioned above is also a good call Quote

Dan Dare Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 If you like the Gibson sound, maybe find a Ripper/Grabber? Great sounding instruments. Quote
