I've always thought there is more music in the space you leave between music, than the music you could fill it with.

this is just magnificent funk music imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IydYLIsT9LA

My teacher gave me this track to illustrate exactly the point you are making. Don't fill the gaps with unnecessary notes - just be ready for the busy bit in the middle.
hes a good teacher. i think you can apply this view of bass playing with lots of genres. ;)

Great stuff, I'm glad I'm from the generation of kids who had a big interest and loved the Meters and the genre as a whole.

Now it's Zac Brown & Mumford (something or other),a couple of chords and lyrics that mean absolutely nothing to me. It's fun getting old. :D

To me, the Meters are the ultimate funk band - just sublime. The album that that track opens, Rejeuvination, is excellent.
Here's one from the following album, Fire on the Bayou - brilliant laid back funk, and introducing a bit of synth:

Roger that! I used to play Just Kissed My Baby from the Rejuvination LP in a funk band many years ago. Killer funk and great use of space.
