4/10 vs 2/12

I hear good things about the 2/12 configuration & on the back of that I'm considering buying h8dabass's Genz cab from the f/s forum.
I currently use two Genz 2/10's @ 500w 4ohm & I'm wondering if I'll notice much difference with the 2/12 with the same amp?
Weight isn't an issue really & I don't mind lugging two cabs in.
So, has anyone tried both these configurations & if so what did you prefer & why?
Will the 2/12 pack as much punch given the reduced surface area?
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!

Cheers Steve

Forgot to mention the cab I'm looking at is 4ohm so I'll be getting the same full beans from the amp.

I used to play through 2 Bergantino rigs, 2 210's and 2 112's. I though they were both great. I used the 112's for every day gigs as they were easier to carry and used the 210's for the very loud gigs because I felt they went louder with more headroom.

I have replaced both rigs with a 212 which does 99% of what I need. I add a 112 for the loud gigs but you won't need to do that unless you're also playing with a mad guitarist.

I thought the 10's were punchier and the 12's are warmer with a rounder, fuller tone.

I miss the 10's and wouldn't rule out getting another couple of 210's in the future, but I don't think I'll be selling the 212.

I'd get the cabs and road test each rig to see which you like the best. IMO it's easy to love both. Danweb had a Berg CN212 for sale...... just saying.

I have a Barefaced S12T and an Ampeg 410HLF - and the answer is 'horses for courses'

IMHO, it's like comparing a CD to a vinyl record. The BF is total clarity, very crisp hifi type sound. The Ampeg is more old school, more warmth and overtones. Certainly more bass through the Ampeg than the BF with the same amp.

However........a 212 is a hell of a lot lighter and compact if you've got a gig in a tiny pub, or up 2 flights of stairs, and TBH, I don't suppose your average pub punter is going to notice the difference from the back wall of the bar

Just my 2p :-)

I use a 212 and sometimes I'll put a 210 on top and this is my preferred rig.
The 210 just has the extra bite I like but I have no problem if just the 212 is on the gig.
For overkill, I could go 212 plus 2x210 but haven't felt the need so far.

I do like/prefer the idea of 410 but that unit is 90-100lbs against the 70 or so of the 212.
My compromise is 2x210... so I can mix and match what I want.

I'll probably still go for a lightweight 2x112 mini rig as well

The 10's tend to bite better...with no loss of bass and the 212 is fuller all round...
If weight isn't the issue, I'll always add a 210 to it.

I went from a Markbass 410 to a Markbass 212 (112 combo & 112 ext cab) set-up. Soundwise all I noticed was as Chris B has said, the 410 seemed punchier, the 212 seemd warmer and fuller. In terms of size of sound and available volume, well I`m sure if I had had to really push the volume I may have noticed, but for regular pub gigs in a punk covers band there was nothing lacking.

Thanks for all your views fellas. I'm gonna have a good think & decide what to do. There really isn't anything wrong with my two 2/10's (i love the small footprint when stacked vertically) so I guess it's gas & it might pass.

Also I'm after another focus 2/10 for a friend if you should see one about lemme know!
