Hi guys

Just about to modify a jazz bass and have it defretted. Although stock pickups are ok, I don't like the tone.

Basically what pickups would people recommend to get the fullest tone from a fretless Jazz Bass without adding a preamp etc?!

Regards

Maybe something like DiMarzio Model J's?

They're hum cancelling and not excessively expensive. Also if budget isn't too tight you could look at the nordstrand offerings, aguilar, or some of the custom pickup makers:
I got a lovely set of custom Jazz pickups from the creamery

If you want to look at the more economic end of the spectrum: I've heard great things about the entwhistle offerings.

I had an MIJ Jazz fretless that had been fitted with with Wizard 84s by the previous owner. I always thought that they sounded very easy on the ear.

Really impressed by the standard (active) EMGs I put on my fretted US Standard at the end of last year. I thought they might be a bit too crispy and hi-fi, but I was wrong.

The added bonus is, once you've installed the circuit (very easy - assuming you can accommodate the battery), you can always just swap out for the several other EMG Jazz flavours (JV-X etc).

I've got a Tokai Jazz Sound (jazz copy) with Bartolinis and it sounds absolutely lush - a huge, huge improvement on the original pickups. I haven't done any comparative testing to speak of so the other options mentioned above might be good too...
