Visually stunning, great playing, and great sounding late 80's/early 90's Tokai Jazzsound fretless Jazz, bought from eBay a while back and upgraded considerably, all pending the arrival of my FCS Jaco Jazz which is now here. It's a defret, and whilst the work at the fretlines wasn't perhaps the best (see pics, although don't get me wrong, it's not bad either), the neck is wonderfully finished both back (lightly oiled) and front (lightly varnished) and plays very very nicely, real 'worn in but not worn out' feel. The SD Weather Report PUPs cost over £200 (http://www.thomann.d..._pickup_set.htm) and are absolutely lovely, I'm tempted to drop them into the Jaco but think I'll just move the whole bass on as is. Reverse tuners, new Fender threaded saddle bridge, and new/unplayed Rotosound Solo Bass 45s which I find perfect for Jaco-esque tone without trashing the board. A few cosmetic issues such as the slight damage at the truss rod access, which of course would be easily covered with a pickguard if you wanted to un-Jaco it!

The big question, how much better is the FCS Jazz than the Tokai? Answer, not a great deal, enough, but certainly not £2,000k enough if you get my meaning. If the Tokai was what came out of the box from Fender I certainly wouldn;t have been disappointed. Anyway, I'm keeping the Fender for a number of reasons, but if you came down and played both, you'd be hard pushed to find a huge difference. Both are pretty light, both feel beautifully played in, and both have that lovely vintage fretless Jazz tone, barky and burpy from the back, jazzy and smooth from the front.

Collection from Canterbury or Aberystwyth or meet-up in London, or courier at buyer's expense in a usable if not especially sexy hard case.

The FSC (reliced) in the pics is not for sale :)

Def Jaco vibe happening here! Mwah....
There is indeed some Jaco-ness

Had a few PMs offering trades. Thanks but whilst I'm happy to talk cash offers, I have all the gear I need right now.

That looks lovely. How does the neck depth compare to that of your other jazz fretless?
What is the weight overall and how is the balance on a strap?

Hello Mr T

Weighs in at around 8.5 lbs on the bathroom scales, which is a tad lighter than the FCS Jaco. Neck is 40mm wide and 21 mm deep (centre line) at the nut, which is about a mm deeper than the FCS. This feels more C and the Jaco more D. Having played both this afternoon I have to say that I like each bass equally, but prefer the SD PUPs to those on the FCS, the back PUP especially is outstanding.

Thanks for the info Chris...sounds like you might just hang on to it anyway.
I'll have a think but I'm already a '83 Squire Jazz over my limit at the moment 😉
Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Ha ha, may thanks Martin, not for the first time eh!

I've just finished building a new fretless Jazz so this is up for grabs again with either the Weather Report PUPs at £500 or with some Fender USAs at £350

Cheers

Bump, will listen to offers, happy to talk trades but don't need any more basses or amps thanks. Studio gear, Hi-Fi, and stringed instruments that don't require amps are all on my radar at present :)

Bump.

I'm currently looking at options for a fretless and defo interested - Mrs Lou's new kitchen is currently taking precedent, so I'm a couple of months away from having the desired amount in my "bass bank", but if this is still here late June, expect a PM. 👍

This is now for sale only as per the pics below, with Fender USA PUPS and non-vintage bridge

And this is the bass I've put together to replace it, which is very special (should be, it's cost close to a grand to build from parts). This is not for sale :)

bahh wish I had the cash, I wanted this at £500 ,ive spent far too much buying effects of late :)

Another option is £250 with the original EMG active PUPs. This is a steal because I now have four fretless basses, need to clear the decks and need some cash.

Ha ha, thanks Dan, there's SO many great basses for sale on here at the moment that we're all spoilt for choice - I doubt there's ever been a better time to buy a bass to be honest.

Just seen from your sig that you're letting one of your Jazzes go also. All the best with that mate

Cheers
