Guinness21
I know there is already a tonne of these threads on talkbass already, but this is regarding use with an active bass. I'm joining a band who play a lot of muse, as well as songs like Song 2 by Blur. I know chirs wolstenholme uses a muff fuzz, but I don't think it's aggressive enough. Maybe a germanium or diode fuzz. What do you think? Does prunes & custard do alright with active bass? What about BAT pharaoh? Or maybe an overdrive - b7k?
Cameronj279
I use a B3K and I'd say I could achieve a pretty close tone to many Muse songs.
1976fenderhead
I get this sound with an EHX Deluxe Bass Big Muff going into a Sansamp BDDI (or the bass amp in Guitar Rig in this case for the same purpose, sounds pretty much the same). Guinness21
Yeah the b3k's good for the likes of hysteria. What about Song 2?
hamfist
For me, the B3K is way too noisy at the higher gain settings needed to get anywhere near a "Hysteria" tone, and too mid scooped also. The EHX Muff deluxe is a great pedal at a very good price point ... has all the mids that the original lacked. The negative is that it's a big pedal. For me, the best, best muff for bass is a Fuzzrocious Grey Stache in a blender pedal loop. A truly magnificent pedal. Both the fuzzes I mention also work great with active basses (in fact most muff-based pedals do).
Guinness21
Thanks. It's funny, I actually like the b3k. It's a shame that I can't find any clips of a muff fuzz being used with a stingray bass. I quite like the wren & cuff tfr. What about something like the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh Supreme, I think that has a few settings. Also a few guys on talkbass are suggesting the Prunes & Custard for songs like uprising and starlight - what do you think? Is it ok with active basses. I've found a sound I like for song 2, they guy was using a sansamp rbi with the drive on full and it sounded great. Think I might get a vt bass di when I can afford one. Guinness21
I'm more conviunced about the muff fuzz after seeing this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkcAZw1SUv0 I think the tall font russian might be the way to go
Higgie
I used a Prunes and Custard for ages with an active bass. Works fine!
