halibut
If I have a stereo headphone output socket that requires 32 ohm impedance from the headphones, and I make a converter that bonds the tip and ring on the jack to make it a mono signal to feed just one of the two headphone cans, what does that mean for the impedance requirement? Will it cause any damage to the output?

Huge Hands
Putting one load (headphone speaker) across 2 outputs won't be too good for your device that is supplying the signal. I'd be more worried about that than the impedance. You ideally need some sort of summing amplifier or mixer that can do a balance shift. However, I'm sure someone will come along in a moment and say that they do it all the time and it's fine!
icastle
Did you know the impedance of your headphones and the spec of the socket before you originally joined the two together? Most people see a headphone socket and just slam whatever they've got into it and manufacturers know that. You may not get the optimum result, but you're certainly not going to destroy anything.
