Helderius
Hi, I recently acquired a Fender Precision, 1974. I have had some doubts on the date and if it has been retouched in paint and the frets have been leveled. Or if this neck originally belong to this instrument. Please let me know your opinions Please check the link below for the remaining photos All the best Hélder Luís http://s871.photobuc...ject/slideshow/
wateroftyne
Seems legit. What's ringing your alarm bells?
Nodd
Compared to my '75, i have had since new: I'm sure my original bridge had allen key adjuster screws not slot My bridge is pretty badly corroded The knobs look flatter than mine, maybe the photo angle, and again mine have corroded, the chrome finish is flaking off, even though i replaced them in '81 and stored them since. My tug bar is black. A bit early for black finish? Some of my observations might amount to individual abuse, so not much 'wrong' about it, the key dates seem real. I wouldn't panic, almost all else is correct IMO etc. Mine is black but with maple neck and is one of those where the black finish is cracking, looks as if it was factory refinished over a natural? wateroftyne
FWIW, the slot screws in the bridge are correct, and the neck pocket shot suggests it's not a refin - the paint stick mask is intact.
Chiliwailer
This is my old bass, I sold it back in 2008. I had absolutely no reason to believe that it was not original, I also had it for sale at NKR Vintage Guitar Emporium, they too obviously had no doubts about it. The neck pocket looks fine, I know Helder has concerns about the paint in the pocket, notably in the sides. It is common for these to look like that, just check Google images or vintage dealers sites. Of course, it is worth remembering that fender back than often had variations, dispcrepencies and at times inconsistency. You can never always tell if a body is original to a neck. But with these in the condition they are in, and with the parts all looking absolutely legit, it would be unlikely that these don't belong together. These basses have a thick poly lacquer, therefore if they are well cared for and played with a strap above someone's belt you won't find much wear on the neck or body. This too is very common. One pot has been changed, I did that because the original was broken and not fixable, the original was included in the sale. I remember the bass being clean and well looked after. I liked it a lot, and only sold it among a few others when I bought my original 1964 Precision. Hope this helps.
Chiliwailer
I forgot to mention, the soldering on the tone looks original. That wouldn't be the case if it was refinished.
