Accoustic bass

I'm having dark thoughts about an accoustic bass (subject to getting the GAS ban lifted by she-who-must-be-obeyed). Does anybody have any experience and advice they couil offer me please.

I've seen a few cheap ones on evil bay and don't have hugely deep pockets so any recommendations etc most gratefully received.
