Some guys (and girls) don't get a fraction of the love their playing deserves.

Tony Kanal springs to mind, and Nick Fyfe (ex-Jamiroquai) is another (everyone talks about Zender and Turner).

Robert Deleo of Stone Temple Pilots had some cracking bass lines and Fat Mike from NOFX often has something cool going on.

Who would you nominate?

Krist Novoselic has a lot more to his playing than people realise. There are some isolated Nirvaba bass tracks knocking about and there are a lot of subtleties in there that you'd never know about.

Nigel Harrison from Blondie, Mike Mills REM, Klaus Voorman, (John Lennon, George Harrison etc). All underrated in my book.

Stuart Morrow the original New Model Army bassist, just an amazing lead bassist, sadly no longer even playing according to a magazine article I read on the band recently, my recommended tracks would be Vengence or Betcha, really anything off their first album

I'd like to suggest at this point that what BC needs is a separate "Underrated Bassists" sub-forum.

Condition for inclusion: each thread must at some point sing the praises of Dennis Dunaway, from the original Alice Cooper band.

;)

Most of these seem to be 'not mentioned' rather than under-rated.

Anyway, my vote would be for Rick Danko of The Band.

He complemented Levon Helm's drumming wonderfully.
Boy, could he sing too.

Harvey Bainbridge - Hawkwind

Now plays Synth / Keys for Hawklords.....he told my brother he doesn't even own a bass anymore.

Eric Czar would be my nominee. He played bass with Joe Bonamassa in the early days, he now does mostly solo stuff but is great player and worth checking out IMHO.

Yes.
Saw him play with Bonamassa twice. He is one of those really great players that makes it look effortless.

Lets give a mention for Bruce Thomas. I don`t often hear much about him, and i like his bass lines.
[/quote]

Definitely - his basslines are amazing.

Another fave of mine is Duff McKagan - he puts some very nice melodies and lines into songs, but as much of his work has been with Slash it`s seems to have been easy for many to overlook what Duff brings to the songs.

I'd have to mention John Deacon. Obviously played for one of the most famous bands but not that many people know or mention him as a bass influence.

I've just put on Wind and Wuthering (having got it to study for a classic rock project :-) ).... Eleventh Earl of Mar hits its stride and I have to say "Mike Rutherford!"

You are right. No-one ever mentions Mike. I guess it's the curse of prog.
