+1 for Richard Cousins.

I'd also point out Chris Chaney, who started out with Alanis Morissette and has progressed under most people's radar.

Under-rated bass players in humungous bands and who rarely get mentioned on BC possibly because they're a bit unfashionable or because they eschew fretboard acrobatics, preferring instead to 'play for the song':

Mike Rutherford
Bill Wyman
Noel Redding
John McVie
Dusty Hill
Garry Tallent (E Street Band)
Joe Bouchard (BOC)
Tina Weymouth
Colin Greenwood

Under-rated, older British bass players of whom we rarely speak:

Tony Levin
Sparko (Feelgoods)
Johnny Spence (Pirates, Johnny Kidd)
Gerry McAvoy (Gallagher / NBZ)
Henry Cluney (SLF)
Tony Goggle (Wayne Fontana, Mungo Jerry, Foghat, Yngve Malmsteen, Quartet of Doom)
Ronnie Lane (Faces)
John Wetton (Family, Crimson, Roxy, Heep, Wishbone Ash)
Johnny Gustafson (Big Three, Roxy)
Barry Adamson (Magazine, Visage, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)
Jah Wobble

And Rocco Prestia.
Henry Cluney was Stiff litte Fingers rhythm guitarist, Ali Mc Mordie was(still is) the mighty bass man

Mike Mills? I'd never thought of him as being underrated, or overrated for that matter.
He plays basslines that fit well with the song, but despite going through several REM albums, I've not come across any that makes him stand out.

Tina Weymouth, now there's a lady who has some basslines that sound simple, but are not.

My shout goes to Pete Trewavas from Marillion.

I went to see Nik Turners band Space Ritual at the Borderline. Their bass player is a guy called Gary Smart and he is superb!

I can't really find out much about him as a musician but in my mind he is a fantastic bass player.

Anyone seen him before or know anything about him?

Went to see Fleetwood Mac last night at the O2 and it really brought it home what a good player John McVie is.

Solid, understated and not flashy in any way but always perfectly supporting the song. My kind of player.

Him and Mick Fleetwood are a top rhythm section.

Really impressed..

Hunter Burgan from AFI - great lines, great playing, great tone.

In fact - MONSTER tone.

I also dig Mike Inez's style. Spector tones, lots of melody and movement in his playing....love it.

Plus, I never see Mark White's name mentioned anywhere these days. Dude can play.

John Paul Jones. Admittedly not undermentioned, but definitely underrated! Bluesy, funky, greasy player with impeccable taste and technique. Who else could have coped with Bonham?

Amongst Bass players he probably is. Not as prominent as a member of zep as the rest of the band though (to the average layman)

Alan Lancaster, original bass player of Status Quo, some great bass melodic work on those early albums

He's slowly becoming more well known, but Michael League from Snarky Puppy comes up with some TASTY bass lines. Definitely follows the less is more approach, and man does he work it!
