51m0n
The empress is a great looking compressor, I've never heard one (would love to) shame it only has 3 ratios though
Der JD
Another vote for the EBS Multicomp here. I have no problems at all with retaining high end.
BigBassBob
The empress is a great looking compressor, I've never heard one (would love to) shame it only has 3 ratios though
You can mix your clean signal with your compressed signal if you find 4:1 is too much. 51m0n
That becomes parallel compression which is a really nice feature in and of itself But I find 2:1 often too heavy at the thresholds I like to set it ☺
Shockwave
Still haven't decided. I feel that the EBS does not have the full features of other compressors. The MXR is a possibility...

Makes for an incredible slap sound. For general uses I have a light compression at 4:1 but I have the mix set to about 3 o'clock.
Eater_of_Birds
Worth a trawl through Ovni Labs for reviews of lots, and lots, of compressors
THIS
Bassnut62
Surprised nobody has mentioned Keeley 2 or 4 knob compressor. It's the only pedal that has been welded to my board for over 5 years now. It is very transparent, preserves clarity and is especially good at the tops IMO. Everything just sounds better through it.
Shockwave
Hmm, I been looking at the Ovni site, still haven't found what I am looking for though. Maybe an M87... Might just go with Ovnis cheap recommendation of a DOD Milkbox and go from there.
juliusmonk
Carl Martin Optical compressor. Pretty transparent and inexpensive Edited April 20, 2015 by juliusmonk
Lozz196
At the LBGS I tried an Aguilar TLC and it didn`t affect the tone at all - really tightened things up on the lows but no tone change.
funky8884
Plenty of great rackmount comps out there.
Shockwave
I have decided! Been looking on Ovnilab and things that are coming up on Ebay. The best Compressor looking at reviews for my needs is the Seymour Duncan Double Back. Has a great write up for a Mid Level Compressor. VCA based with some interesting features and the tone is completely neutral. The fact that they usually come up fairly cheap is a bonus. Just hope people don't bid up on it too much Edited April 24, 2015 by Shockwave
Shockwave
Well, I got outbid Need to find another!
ben4343
I read today that matey from The Mars Volta froths about the Boss CS-2 for the very reason that it has a mega top end. I'm afraid I can't offer any personal suggestions, but thought this was worth a mention as I hadn't seen it come up yet.
elephantgrey
ovnilabs says that the cs2 rolls off the highs, and looses a bit of lows when bypassed. that and it only has level attack and release controls (no separate threshold ratio and makeup(/input) gains). and off the top of my head i dont think it has metering, so would be hard to dial in even with a full range of controls.
