Is it a stereo 600W per channel power amp? Bet it sounds hoooooooooooooooooooge!

One of my old brochures lists an AH1200SM

Preamp as GP7SM

Output stage :2-channel solid state

Power output: 600 + 600 watts RMS

Output impedance: 2-ohms

Looks like it could use the PPA1200 power stage although the PPA on it's own is heavier than the AH1200SM
Is this the amp? F**kadoodle-do - look at the size of it....

I think I'm heading off to the porn section to start a thread on Trace Elliot. Anyone coming (so to speak...) ?
I'll come over with my TE porn, yes.

Sadly, tho, that ain't the head, that's from ~1999 and it's the AH1000-12 rather than an AH1200SM. But I reckon it would be a similar size!

Most of what I (think I) know has already been said, but the trace range at that time consisted of either the SM or SMX preamp on top of various sized poweramps.

The SM range is the 7-band EQ, and the SMX range was 12 band, with greater connectivity/compressor functions

Linking this to Doug Wimbish, he was certainly using the SMX at the time (according to the promo/endorsement shots I remember).

The 1200 in the amps name refers to the powerstage, which would be 2x 600w, or 1200w bridged. I think the others in the range were the 300, 400, and 600. The 1200 powerstage could drive an elephant and the 'popular' arrangment of cabs was 2 x 1x15" with 2 x 4x10 w/horn. Awesome.

I have a similar amp

The number on my amp is 150, which is good for 300 watt. Even this 'little' bro in the series has balls, I run it through an ashdown mag400 and I never have to turn it above 11 o'clock (both gain/outpout).
I don't see these amps a lot, so it might be a very small series?
I've had a similar problem with my AH350SMX. It's definitely the SMX 12 band pre-amp and clearly has a 350W power stage, but I can't find any information specific to it. There's the manual covering the AH300SMX and AH400SMX, but nothing on the 350. Weird.
I could be mistaken, but I think the original amps were the 250 and 350, which were then 'enhanced' up to the round numbers of 300 / 400 (in terms of the powerstage).

It surprises me that there is trouble getting info on these amps... they really were the (classy) bread and butter amps of the 90s. You couldn't go to a gig/studio and not see green somewhere. If there aren't many for sale then its probably because they are class and people hang on to them.

IMO both SM and SMX series of amps were the last great amps that Trace made. The V series was awesome, but the SM(X) were just so versatile.
I'm not sure about that. However my amp does say 150 watts (300 watt RMS). That might be what could cause some confusion?
Are you sure it doesn't say 150W RMS (300W peak)? Seems more likely knowing Trace and their numbering systems.
