I've seen the Stones four times. At the Greenford Odeon in about 64ish, twice at Earls Court in 76 and the O2, at the end of their last tour. All great gigs and a spread of about 45 years. It's not that at all, I just don't really rate either of them. ironically, when I was a Pretty Thing, I had a VIP pass to Wembley Stadium (about 92 or so) but was still totally underwhelmed. To me they epitomize everything a rock & roll band is suppose to be. IMO they are one of the few true rock & roll experiences left on the planet. I would have loved to have seen them on one of the smaller gigs they recorded for "Stripped" Hours later the gates opened and we ran to the very front. Minutes after starting Mick Jagger ran along the front row doing hand shakes/slaps, while Keef prowled the stage about 10ft in front of me, grinning like an ape the whole time, so so cool. IIRC the story was that if they'd finished the "Bridges To Babylon" tour as planned, they'd have been in the UK long enough to pay tax & Mick didn't want that. That was the story I was told when the gig was postponed, but the tickets were still valid for the new gig a few months - and a new tax year later. Technically Bill is still the bass player and I would think would have at least Director status as well as compensation in their organization. My girlfriend at the time and I exited the tube station at Wembley to see the stage (a giant metal cobra) sticking out the stadium, and realised our gate was the other end. A long wait ensued, but when the place was opened it was empty. Geoff Hurst didn't do a length of the field as quick as we did. Great gig, lots of bands can rock but they can roll. Still some of the best gigs I have ever been to, and even now think they can still do it, albeit in a rather more ermm...mature way. I always think the Stones 'magic' is that thing of the songs / playing / band chemistry as a whole, and perhaps the reason some people don't get it is because they are looking for technical virtuosity and 'flash', which the Stones have never been about. Having said that, Keith and Charlie are two of my favourite ever players, and their loose groove makes the band sound like no other. Often imitated, never bettered. Whether it was actually true or not I couldn't say.
