Tuco
I'm not 100% sure how best to describe it but last night we played an open secret kinda warm up kinda gig kinda jam over South Northamptonshire's equivalent to The Slaughtered Lamb : The George at Tiffield. Upon walking into the place, the three of us knew receptive ears would be few and far between, even though there were 8 guest ales on tap to cloud peoples judgements. We got talking to two dudes who seemed cool.Very proud of the fact they had drank 5 of said guest ales already, very keen to drink the remaining 3 and seemingly very keen to hear our set(s). Unfortunately though, after last being seen in the car park smoking what can only be described as a "jazz cigarette" they became very keen to disappear.... we were on our own. All i kept thinking of as we played through our first set was the Hüsker Dü philosophy of making the people that don't love you, hate you even more.. and hate us they did. I f***ing LOVED it!!! As each person left the pub and for every screwed up face and gesticulation toward ear drums made, I smiled more and more. For the sake of clarity: we are an instrumental 3 piece who play original, improvisational 'pieces' , a bit trippy, a bit different and pretty funky, so shouts of "Do you know any Abba?" and "Turn the singer up a bit!" were particular high points for me. We also got likened to "70's porn soundtracks" at one point.. awesome!! The landlady asked the drummer if we could "tone it down a bit" for the second set to which he replied "Not really, no" bless him wink emoticon What was I to do? I just dialled in a bit more distortion.. worked for me. The evening was a total success.
Hats off to you, must have been a right giggle. I once played at a stag do, we had porn projected onto the wall behind us and improvised to the their 'grooves', the singer was more like a stand up comedian, good memories. But not half as funny as your gig last night, your folk weren't prepared for that

That's something I've always wanted to say, but since I'm in this for the money I can't. We can't afford to alienate the people that hire us. When an LL ask us to turn down, we turn down. We want to be re-booked. Blue Edited April 5, 2015 by blue

Bobthedog
I have yet to gig and obviously have a lot to learn before I do so. What is the reasoning for wanting to annoy the owner / few punters? Is that not a short term play for the band?

Bobthedog
Oh well, I will have to remember that. There was silly old me thinking I could just say no if I was asked back. Alles Klar.
