Cameronj279
I find the GAK demos to be pretty much as bad as they could possibly be. I can't complain though because I doubt I could do better than either of these.
Twincam
Most online demo videos are nasty. Slapping, guitarists in disguise, ambient mic'ing, bass thru 15 watt practice combo, webcam microphone, DI'd fuzz pedal, bass recorded at threshold of human hearing levels... Did I miss any?
Im not fussy as i can live with certain things such as it being through a little amp, as many people practice through little amps so that's cool. I don't mind if the person isn't that greatest player, long as they are playing something skill appropriate say a simple blues, rock, funk lines gives me the gist of things. Slapping only is one that drives me nuts. I turn off or leave a comment lol. Poor mics is annoying too. Using effects all through the demo is annoying as i want to hear the actual sound. Bad recording levels. Too much talking and only a few seconds of playing.
To be fair, it hasn't been put up as a demo, it's a new owner rather egotistically showing his bass off - those moves, those facial expressions, those shorts

ahpook
My pet peeve is people using a demo of a bass to show off their playing (and I know I'm not alone in this) Slapping and playing a bass 19 to the dozen tells you nothing about how the bass sounds, I like to hear legato playing with plenty of sustained notes to hear how the bass sounds... BigRedX
I really can't see the point of on-line demos. They tell me nothing about how the bass will sound in my hands through my rig playing with my band.
Cameronj279
I can understand why people hate when there is an excessive use of slapping or done to a level which is far above or below the standard you'd want but I see no issue with a little bit of appropriate slappage. I never use a plectrum but I still find it quite good to hear how it sounds (roughly) when one is used.
40hz
Youtube bass demos. Very rare do you find a useful one, the rest of the time it's just self indulgent, smug, samey sounding slappery. Instant switch off. That said the best of a bad bunch are probably the session music ones (even though there's still too much slap and it's all in German xD) Edited April 6, 2015 by 40hz
But TBH unless I buy something that is very cheap and poorly made it will appeal to someone even if that someone is not me. It's simple enough for me to buy instruments solely on looks and move them on if the sounds and playability don't do it for me.

They are top notch musicians IMO, and good lads! I do take your point that as a demo for the pickups, they don't really show what they can do for standard finger type playing etc. But they were asked to demo like this because they'd been seen playing this kind of style. Although i dont want to give the impression i speak for them, i just wanted to give some understanding from their point of view really

FuNkShUi
No offence caused at all. I'm sure the boys would laugh if they saw it too! Really I just wanted to put it in context a little and fight their corner, if nothing else. It's like I said, they are top musicians, this is only a snapshot of what they do. If this type of technical playing is what your into, this project of theirs is called 'kinky wizards'. Great name hahaha
