Foxx
I've been doing some research into the original stingray pre amps, apparently the epoxied versions used tantalum capacitors, as opposed to electrolytic, im no electronics whizz, so dont really know what the difference is internally with them; but in my own basses both sound very different, considering the two circuits are said to be electrically the same. The '82 version sounds a lot brighter with more treble than the epoxy version in my '77 bass, which seems to have a fatter warmer sound in general, both are strung with the same guage sunbeams, so I discounted strings having anything to do with it. The '77 is also lower output, both with its original pickup, and a nordstrand mm4 replacement. I wonder if other people have found the same, or if it varies between different instruments? ahpook
There may be minor variations in component values that would change the EQ frequencies slightly, and here http://www.musicmanb...tompage0019.htm it suggests that "Audiophiles would argue that the electrolytic has a more mellow and pleasing tone to the ear." Maybe that's it ? dannybuoy
I tried a Stinger (pre-EB clone) in my Sub Ray4 and took it straight out again, as it also did not have enough treble.
