With the risk of increasing GAS, I'd like to share a recent P bass shootout I did. My very first Precision was #4 - a nice '79 Maple neck, heavy as hell...

If you want, you can hear it here: http://bass-pedals.c...bass/index.html

Great bass there, my 78 is the same - and rather heavy as well :)

My first P-Bass was a bitsa that my parents got a local luthier to build for me for Christmas when I was 15. Shell pink with a white scratchplate and a rosewood Jazz neck.

Since then I've had (and still have) a 57-type bitsa, Squire VM, a Dee Dee Ramone and, my main bass, an '08 MIM which is just perfect.
I've also had and got rid of a crappy MIM and an American Special.

The wife also has a Tanglewood P copy and a rather nice red metal flake Fender

Come to think of it, there are a lot of P-Basses in my house.

That is my favourite of all the sound samples.
it certainly has a more bright sound and presence than the other basses. I must admit, though, that it's not my main P bass anymore. That would be the 3rd 79 - partly due to the sound, but also to the fact it has an A-neck. :-)

My 60s one has a C neck and feels gigantic. Really liked the 70s one I tried, narrow nut but really deep neck, maple board too, sounded great.

Yes, love those chunky 70's basses too. But I must admit that when listening to all these P basses I don't think the weight has as much of an impact on the tone as I used to think.

I always wanted a pre-CBS custom colour Precision. This one will soon be mine:

Congrats. I remember that lovely '64 LPB used to be at the Guitar Center in Totowa (NJ). There is some sticker residue at the back of the body where the previous owner attempted to cover up the buckle wear with masking tape and store manager explained me he was able to remove most of it. In Jan 2014 they sent the bass to a guitar show in LA (NAMM) and it never came back. It then re-surfaced in Sweden with Anders Anderson who I suspect acquired it at NAMM. Enjoy that great bass.

I think I'm converted, always thought anything but a P. Then I saw an American Deluxe with the original style humbucker going for £500 on eBay and thought, what the heck? It needed some tlc and I still prefer the tone of all my other basses at home but in front of the band it just sounds so right. Nothing else has made it to a gig for a year now, I think it may be 'the one'.

 • 2 weeks later...

Having only got my Mexico P a few weeks back i was already very impressed given that sometimes they get a bad QC write up.

Anyway tonight i have re-strung it with Rotosound 66' and given it a set up and it is now even better.....☺

I am a happy Precision Appreciation Club member 👍

Yep, for some reasons the MIMs get a bad write-up but I`ve had a good few, none have been bad, and the post 2008 ones have been very good indeed.

And tomorow, I'll go see, try (and probably buy) a MIke Dirnt Squier P.
I love mine :) Thinner neck than usual for a Precision (which usually would put me off, but it's good), and very light weight. I put an Entwistle neodimium pickup on it (£27) and it sounds immense.

Posted this in the Gear Porn section earlier but thought I'd chuck it in here as well too - my pair of Matt Freeman Precisions. The white one is tuned to C# for band use and came with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, although I'll be putting the original pickup back in when it arrives. The white one has a couple of gaps in the neck pocket which is a shame considering the black one is flawless. They're both excellent players, absolutely zero GAS for me right now.

What's that little thumb-rest made from and how is it fixed to the bass?
I use them in all my Precisions and most Jazzes too (it's that little black think on my avatar's red Precision too)..

When I bought my first OLP MM2, that very thumb-rest on the Squier was attached to the OLP's pickguard, with strong double sided sticky tape, roughly at the position where a Precision pickup would be mounted. I removed it but kept it. Then I found it very useful on other basses. I really like to have something to rest my thumb at roughly the spot where the top of a Stingray's pickup would be...

I had the thumb rest copied in aluminium by 'apa' (I haven't seen him around here in ages! ), so I have a couple more.
Last year we had a thread about thumb rests and a few people liked this design, so I made a trace in Illustrator and 'Diablo' made a few of these in black acrylic for those who wanted them. I wish I had asked for more, the plastic ones are very nice, and I sanded them down to about 3mm (the original is 5mm I believe), which is perfect. They stay in place very well, I never had one move, let alone detach. But you can detach them when you want to, and remove the sticky residue without leaving a mark.

I keep thinking I should find one of those laser-cutting places to get them to make a few more of these for me.

That just makes it a very authentic 70s RI... ;) white, black and maple is just the best P colour combo.

What, like this one that I picked up at a car boot sale a few years ago..?

I've since moved her on, but after a restring and tweak she was quite playable. IIRC she only cost £20.00
