chris_b Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 (edited) Percy Sledge died today, aged 73. When A Man Loves A Woman is one of my favourite songs. I believe it's [s]Tommy Cogbill[/s] on bass. Correction: Albert "Junior" Lowe on bass. Edited April 14, 2015 by chris_b Quote
louisthebass Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Sad to hear that, another 60's Southern Soul legend gone . Weird to think that "When a Man Loves a Woman" was released, they only realised that the horns were out of tune after it had been pressed. Quote
timmo Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I guess we are coming close to the end of the 60`s era of performers. R.I.P Quote

casapete Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Just heard this on Radio 2, never realised the horns were out of tune before - they just sound so right. And love the organ part, played I believe by the great Spooner Oldham. Wonderful stuff. Quote
To be honest, I wasn't aware that they were out of tune until I read "Sweet Soul Music" by Peter Guralnick many years ago. Couldn't have been much in it (where the tuning was concerned) if the guys in the studio missed it on the playback.... Quote

skankdelvar Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 RIP Mr Sledge. Perfect delivery of an achingly beautiful song. Quote
