spectoremg Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It started with Blur, then the next band, and the next etc. The bass had been stolen? Anyone seen it? Also not enough boogie-woogie piano. Quote

40hz Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It has annoyed me for years how bass is/has never been mixed in on this programme. I can't think of many (if any) performances where it's even remotely stood out. Quote
Lozz196 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I thought Alex James` bass came across quite well this eve, and was pleasantly surprised, as usually the bass isn`t present at all on Later. Quote
Huge Hands Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I find these comments odd - about 10 years ago I bought a "Later with Jools Holland - best of NuSoul/R&B" DVD. I thought the mixes were really good on all of them, especially the bass, and I love the DVD - I still often watch it now. As this kind of music lends itself to good bass tone - perhaps the mix is more to do with the band's source sound than we would like to think? Quote
spectoremg Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 There's another thread on here about the BBC going the 'subby' route with bass, and as Genesis weren't on doing Dance On A Volcano there wasn't any bass to be heard Alex James looked bored? Quote

spectoremg Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 The super hi-fi cinema system's always on for music shows Quote

bonzodog Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I too thought alex james' bass sounded great, and I have sh*t TV speakers. Quote

leschirons Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Did Alex " thecheesemaster" James need to be there? Is he skint? Probably not. His bass came over fine sound-wise but the song was a total crap 3 chord bash and multi-millionaire Damon Albran looked like he hadn't washed for a month and couldn't afford a dentist. Now I really do sound like my Dad did. Quote
cameltoe Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Alex James's logo-less '57 style P bass looked nice though. Wonder how gets on with a 1.75" neck when it's hanging lower than his balls? Quote
TimR Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 It sounded ok to me. But then I'm one for a blended band sound rather than stand out bass. I suspect the sound engineers on the BBC are proper sound engineers rather than pop music producers. Quote

He playes great melodic lines but always looks like he`s either doing it in his sleep, or that he`s there to just make up the numbers. He must have big hands. Quote
Marvin Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I watched it last night and thought that the 'mix' had improved somewhat. I quite liked the mix they achieved. Cohesive is the word I'd use. Usually there's one element that overpowers the rest of the band but not last night. Quote

I always think that there is a much more informal 'Jazz' feel about the whole program. It's more of an amplified acoustic set. If that makes sense. The kind of sound you would enjoy if it was in your front room rather than a stadium or underground club. Quote

bassmachine2112 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Really enjoyed Laura Marling. Bass was not very prominent even had bass boost on tele Musicians union-more bass or triangle players will walk out in sympathy Quote
PTB Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I enjoyed it on iPlayer and bass (and overall sound) was fine. I have a Panasonic 5 way + sub system. Perhaps we need a gear porn thread for our TV sound systems or perhaps we should lobby Alex to make a Barefaced system. Quote
tauzero Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 When watching musical programs, I route the telly sound into my hi-fi (it was state-of-the-mid-budget art in 1980). I tried that with Later (just as an experiment, I really CBA to watch it) and the bass was perhaps not as far up in the mix as I'd have liked but certainly not lost. Quote
