Prime_BASS
As above really. I like the sound I'd get out of one but aside from that everything else I'm either indifferent on or dislike. Overall design I deslike and I'd rather have a jazz like neck. The only thing that comes close to a simple P that I like the look of is the Modulus persuasion and since I dont have £3K stashed away that's not going to happen. What else is out there? Highfox
Overall design you like, sound you like, but not the necks. You do know Fender P's come in a wide range of different sized necks from chunky to Jazz width?
BobVbass
Lakland Duck Dunn (signature - the sparkly red one, not the special edition) - great sound, build quality and a Jazz neck Secondhand about £5-600 Edited April 16, 2015 by BobVbass
wingnutkj
If all you're after is the tone, and you don't like the body shape or neck width, there are a number of other basses out there with P pickups in the necessary location. Or, as a stop-gap, you could wire a Jazz up with a series-parallel switch - gives an approximation of the P pickup sound and is easily done if you're able to solder. badboy1984
My fender P bass had been modded. J pickup added to the bridge to add some bite, I can always just use the p pickup alone. Also I hate the P neck so I've change it to a glossy maple jazz neck. Is my main gigging bass. Already got rid of my stingray, ACG and bongo because of this bass. Mudpup
Sandberg California PM/VM series. Active/passive switch. P and MM pickup. Jazz style neck. I have one and its bob on for a great P sound when you switch to passive and roll the blend to full on neck pickup. And tons of other great sounds when you don't........ Theres one here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/259028-sandberg-california-pm-4-trade-for-us-mm-sterling/page__fromsearch__1 - nothing to do with me btw. merello
Fender do a PJ Special I think that has a jazz neck, P-pickup and Jazz bridge pick-up. Weststarx
What about a Mark Hoppus signature bass?
simonlittle
I'd just stick a jazz neck on a proper standard P-bass. I much prefer the feel of a P-bass neck and have thought about switching to that on my jazz. Jazz necks feel like a guitar to me. But then I do play upright bass half the time... Muzz
Three of my four main basses sound like a P when I want them to, but none of them look like one at all - a Shuker Horn, a Dingwall ABZ and a Thunderland (Thunderbird with a Lakland neck). It's all down to pickup and position thereof.
Paddy515
Hi - have you thought of the Jaguar bass shape. I have just acquired a Modern Player CiC which has the 38mm wide neck at the nut and the P /J pup configuration. Great feel to the neck and great sound with just the P pup. Kind of surprised by the overall quality and does the Precision job just fine
Henrythe8
Ther is also the much ignored but much wonderful... Warwick Reverso AS. Nothing like a P or a J or anything else you'd seen. Despite the weird look, astonishiungly comfortable and light. 38mm nut width.
Lozz196
Yamaha BBs would be where I`d look, or if wanting an actual Fender look at the FSR runs, or the Nate Mendel Sig.
karlplaysbass
have you tried any of the squire pj basses i find their necks nice and there no where near as thick as a p
louisthebass
The Yamaha BB1100S is a great bass - the pickup selector gives you a nice chunky P bass tone when you need it, or if you want that burpy J bass tone, it does that too . I had one for years, and is the best 4 string bass I've ever owned (wish I still had it).
White Cloud
Hmmm....if you want a P bass but dislike P basses then you don't actually want a P bass because in actual fact you dislike P basses and will therefore dislike the P bass that you are inevitably going to buy and get rid of it for something that you do actually really do like. Just saying.

Prime_BASS
Hate the looks (until I see one in someone else's hands) Dislike the feel. Just about the only thing I do like is the sound from the single pickup. I would pickup a Mark Hoppus bass but I already have a jazz looking bass. PlungerModerno
I'd look at all the basses featuring similar electronics (and hence sound fairly alike) and see which one feels right in your hands. Then it's just down to picking a colour or body style (if you want to look at custom routes). Depending on what you like the look of - I'd look at ACG, warwick, BC Rich, Cort, Dean, Aria Pro II, Westone, Yamaha, and any other that takes your fancy. I'd look at trying new & used. krispn
Musicman Big Al has a massive p sound both passive and active not the usual look though. Its also got a heap more tones available if required.
