Pinball
I just wondered if anyone uses it. I was thinking that I need a subtle volume boost to bring my bass to the front of the mix for some small passages of two numbers. I really don't want to change the sound too much and can't really stop to change settings. I use an EBS Multicomp, which has a gain dial so would adding a 2nd one with the grain dialled up would do the trick? What about alternatives? I see a pedal called a Steel Leather?. Any advice would be much appreciated. I need something pretty compact though as I'm tight on space on my board Edited April 18, 2015 by Pinball
ahpook
I only really found the Steel Leather useful for adding clank to the bass sound, never really got on with it. You could use another compressor as a boost, but how about a preamp pedal before your existing Multicomp - depending on the level of boost added and the ratio your compressor is set to, it could slightly fatten and boost your signal. Of course, you could put if after as well ! Something like an MXR Micro Amp would do the trick. Edited April 17, 2015 by ahpook
dannybuoy
There's plenty of tiny 1590A sized boost pedals out there if space is a premium. Here's one for starters: http://www.one-control.com/granith-grey-booster.html Also Mooer do some cheaper options too.
Pinball
Thanks, I have had a look in the directions you both pointed and sure enough there are loads of good microamps and boosts out there to pick from. I already have a BB Xotic pre-amp and a B' Assmaster OD so have that area well covered. I notice there are some British made pedals from Boo etc. Which to choose...its always tempting to get something that does more than you need

Greg Edwards69
A simple graphic eq pedal should do the job if it's only for a couple of passages (stick it after your compressor). You can pick up boss derived copies quite cheaply, or for something more compact, there's the Mooer Graphic B. Not only can you use them to boost overall volume, but you can tailor the shape of the boost to cut through more - perhaps just boosting a little 800hz - 1khz would do the trick? toneknob
Yep, I've got an Analogman BiComprossor which allows either/or/both compressors to be engaged at any time. Or, just get a boost as others have said - Mark Bass Super Booster is another example.
The Badderer
+1 for the EQ option with added boost. this way you get extra options instead of just another compressor. over time the EQ will pay off.
elephantgrey
Strangely i have got half an idea to chain compressors myself, but for a different purpose. I use a MB Compressore at the start of my chain to tame my playing a bit, and make my drive 'section' of my board behave a bit more. What im thinking of is putting a compressor at the end of my chain (just before delay) so i can use it to sidechain the kick. I think in your case though, your better off going with an EQ pedal or a boost/od pedal. You dont really want to squeese all of your dynamics out for a volume increase, where an eq would let you pick out preferable freq.s or a boost could let you colour your sound. Mornats
The MarkBass Super Booster looks nice: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Mark_Bass_Pedals.html - around halfway down, £149 new so not bad. It has the VLE and VPF filters on - same as my combo. So if you want to try those out, bring your stuff round (or I'll pop over one night with the combo) and you can see what they sound like.
