YehItsRyan
Hi all. I have been playing bass for 4 and a half years now. I have never really learned much about scales or keys, I know the note positioning. Now I have started taking my music seriously really for the first time I feel like I should make an effort to learn more on the theory. I have always sort of fiddled around and through trial and error I have stumbled across what goes together. I want to have a greater understanding of how music is put together and to push my playing onto the next step. I am only interested in learning the basics at the minute, the how and the why as I feel a basic knowledge will be beneficial to me but I do not know where to start so can some fellow bass players help a guy out
CamdenRob
If you weren't so far away I'd say pop round and I'll give you an introduction. It's quite a complicated thing to explain over a messageboard but it's beautifully simple when someone explains it in person. Perhaps a single hour in a lesson would tell you more than days of forum browsing
SubsonicSimpleton
You could start here if you want an online info source http://www.studybass.com/study-guide/ There are lots of music study resources online nowadays, and they often explain the same thing in different ways, so you might find that some cross referencing can be helpful, but as CamdenRob says being able to talk to someone in person can be very helpful. Coilte
All helpful replies so far. I'll second the "Study Bass" site. Here is another set of chronological lesson clips on You Tube : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLImrzCNnL5PkSfa1gUpsGzSMELR31yW9h
Ross
I used ravenspirals theory guide, it's a fanastic guide for getting to grips with theory. http://www.worldofbryan.com/rsg2mt.pdf I wholly recommend it, really helps explain how music works but you needn't know how to read music or play an instrument to understand it. Once you've got the idea the learning curve is applying it to bass Edited April 22, 2015 by Ross

It's really a pdf or mp3 file (as noted in the text...), but the quaint forum software frigs it up; it's a 'feature' (read 'bug'... ) in the forum software. Hope this helps.
